Verizon has spent three years positioning wireless as a wire replacement: its 2017 trials in 11 cities framed 5G as home broadband before the commercial launch of 5G Home in Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and Sacramento in the October 2018 four-city rollout. Today's move extends the same fixed-wireless thesis over the existing LTE network instead, blanketing 48 states wherever Verizon has neither wired competitors nor its own in-home 5G.

The carve-out is the story: rather than a broadside against cable, this is a filler product aimed at unserved rural households — and the restriction implicitly concedes that LTE capacity can't be spent everywhere. That caution looks prescient given later reporting that US 5G has largely delivered only 4G-like speeds anyway.
