Google unveils Pixel 5 with a 6-inch 90Hz OLED display, ultrawide rear-facing camera instead of zoom lens, 5G, 8GB RAM, and fingerprint sensor on back for $699

It's October, so despite the weird year we're having, Google is hosting a (virtual) event to show off its latest smartphone, the Pixel 5.

Meet the new Google Pixel phones 👋 From our latest AI and Assistant features, to the biggest ever battery we've put in a Pixel, to industry-leading camera features, the Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 provide more help at a more helpful price. https://blog.google/...

Welcome to the season of #5G confusion! The new Google Pixel foists another choice on phone shoppers: How fast do I want my 5G? Two Pixel 4a 5G models support different networks—and one costs more. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple does the same. Sigh. https://www.washingtonpost.c…

Google is going full homebody with its latest announcements. Nothing too exiting, nothing too expensive, nothing too saturated. The cozy, pastel medium. With @geoffreyfowler https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ...

Face Unlock & Project Soli gone; mid-tier chip used for the first time. These moves seen counterintuitive, but it sounds like Google have finally accepted their lot in life, and are gunning for the mid-tier market instead of trying (and failing) to compete in the big leagues. htt…

Honestly, I think Google have nailed it with the price/features of the Pixel 4a 5G & Pixel 5. Can't wait to test them though! What do you reckon? 👍👎 #Pixel5 @madebygoogle https://twitter.com/...

There's a real absurdity to Googling “Pixel 5” and not finding Google's own announcement of the Pixel 5 on the first page of Google search results. https://blog.google/...
  • @dcseifert Dan Seifert on x
google moving the Pixel 5 to a standard + ultrawide camera makes it look good on a comparison table against an iPhone 11, but a telephoto lens is more useful to the average person and I'll miss it

With the latest Pixel phones, Google has abandoned its competition with Apple and Samsung for the top of the market. They are all-in on mid-tier, which could be a smart move given they didn't gain much traction at the high-end. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

Google's new phones are official! 📲 The #Pixel5 adds 5G, water resistance, wireless (reverse) charging and ups the RAM to 8GB. 📸 Also boosted: the camera, with ultrawide shooter (FINALLY) & big upgrades to both HDR+ and video modes. 📅 Delivers Oct 30 for $699 starting. https://tw…

OK, this is made for me! Google Assistant will wait on hold for me. Now just needs to sternly talk to customer service for me. https://twitter.com/...
  • @ow @ow on x
WOW you can put *google assistant* on hold for you when you get put in a queue (at your bank, for example) and it'll let you know when your call is answered. this is amazing! https://twitter.com/...

Google's new Pixel 5 ships in colors called Just Black and Sorta Sage. If Google named weekdays, they would be called Clearly Monday Only Tuesday? Almost Thursday Arguably Friday Finally Really Friday

It's interesting to see Google outright ditch Face ID on the Pixel 5 a year after it launched for the first time... but honestly I'd love to have fingerprint unlock back given COVID https://twitter.com/...
  • @ow @ow on x
“Hold for Me” is really neat. It sits in the phone queue for you and even transcribes what it hears so you don't have to worry - when the company picks up, you get a notification https://twitter.com/...

🤯 I love the team at Google slowly chipping away on all the things annoying about phone calls. https://blog.google/...
  • @brianroemmele Brian Roemmele on x
Hold For Me is a wonderful use case for the Google Assistant AI. Using some of the technologies of Google Duplex the system will allow the user to have complete autonomy while on hold. This is precisely the type of use case that will expand high utility of Google Assistant. https…

Can't think of a more helpful feature, the @Google Assistant will now wait on hold for you and let you know when you've been taken off of hold! (No more pesky hold music!) https://techcrunch.com/...

The Hold for Me feature on Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G is brilliant. Google Assistant will stay on the line for you! iPhone 12, your move. https://www.tomsguide.com/... #Pixel5 #Pixel4A5G #iPhone12

every time i'm tempted to switch back to an iPhone, i remember how often I answer incoming calls with Google Assistant - now it can sit on hold *for me* there's no way I'll go back 😆

No freaking way! The colour options of iPad Air 4th Gen and the Google Nest Audio. What type of coincidence is this? 😳 https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Google finally has a well-segmented, mature lineup. With the same chip as the Pixel 5, but a larger screen & 3.5mm audio jack, the Pixel 4a 5G is an excellent option - I'd imagine it will prove to be the most popular. https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...
  • @themrmobile Michael Fisher on x
For the more budget-conscious, the #Pixel4a5G retains the 5G, but ditches: -water resistance -wireless charging -2GB of RAM (down to 6GB) -a few mAh of battery and gains: +3.5mm jack +0.2" display size in exchange for a $200 savings (starting at $499). 💵 https://twitter.com/...

There has never really been a clear plan behind Pixel, nor Nexus before it. These are perfectly decent phones, but why is Google making them? https://twitter.com/...

Just stop making handsets Google. Leave it to Samsung, OnePlus and even Microsoft. https://twitter.com/...

Compared with Oppo and Xiaomi, which have benefited from Huawei's troubles, Google's handset sales have been disappointing. Good relaunch day scoop from @ChengTingFang and @Lauly_Th_Li https://asia.nikkei.com/...

A lot of interesting figures here (I know, I know, analyst shipment numbers etc etc). But important to note that the specs of Pixel 5 were set in stone long before Covid. The change in direction for Pixel phones predates the pandemic. https://asia.nikkei.com/...
