Marc Bodnick launches Telepath, a “kinder” social network with Reddit's subreddit topic structure, Twitter's in-the-moment feel, and Snapchat's ephemerality
mansplaining, microaggressions, sealioning, gaslighting, endless replying etc. /1 Kia Richards / @kiarichards_ : I'm excited about this platform and the requirements for people to use their real identities. I'm not a fan of engaging people using pseudonyms. https://twitter.com/... Vivek Karuturi / @vivekxk : Our tiny team has been working tirelessly for the past couple years to launch a new social product. So excited to finally introduce the world to @telepath! https://twitter.com/... Shweta / @shwetak_ : As part of this batch of invites to @telepath, I'm interested how this new wave of consumer social startups prioritize community & moderation over growth at all costs! Are positive, curated conversations possible as a platform scales? cc @daniellexo @smc90 @Tatiana_Estevez https://twitter.com/... Jason B. Prado / @jasonpjason : Telepath has been my primary social app for the past year. It's a good antidote to the brain poisoning I get on this site. Smart people and really high moderation standards. https://twitter.com/... Josh Kopelman / @joshk : Excited by @telepath's launch — a new social network that is focused on building the best platform for infinite threaded conversations. DM me for an invite. https://twitter.com/... Jessica Lessin / @jessicalessin : I love that Telepath has been intentional about thinking about the experience of women online. Excited to dig in. https://twitter.com/... Shefaly Yogendra, PhD / @shefaly : As an early early adopter of many things but notably @Quora (since 2010) and Telepath since whatever pre Covid year (uh 2019), I have watched community scaling closely. Marc & Richard's intent in building a good community is clear. #Social needn't be crappy. #BuildBetter https://twitter.com/... Stefan Smith / @thestefansmith : I've been on Telepath for a few months now and the level of conversation possible on their is really unique. It's time for a less reactionary online platform; I'm glad that @MarcBodnick and his team have stepped into the void. https://twitter.com/... Sarah Lacy / @sarahcuda : Interesting thread. all of this is 100% doable. tech has done harder things. Comes down to true priorities. we shall see.... https://twitter.com/... Biz Carson / @bizcarson : That doesn't mean it's all rainbows and smiles on Telepath. The anti-Trump network was renamed from TrumpSucks to DumbHitler, and there's other groups like BidenSucks and NYTimesSucks. Like any network, they're going to have to find the line. https://www.protocol.com/...
The internet sucks for women. It's not just obvious harassment and hate. It's also the hostile, subtle, passive-aggressive misogynistic conversation tactics used by men — mansplaining, microaggressions, sealioning, gaslighting, endless replying etc. /1

A small group of men on the internet silence and drive out women from participating in open spaces. It's hard to say whether misogyny or disinformation is the biggest problem with online conversation, but both are a crisis. /2
I focus on the human elements of the social conversation space. My ambition is for Telepath to build a community (1) which is great for women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ writers, (2) where disinformation doesn't proliferate, and (3) where the overall tone is very kind. /3
In addition to misogyny, we're also focused on racism & transphobia. These 3 often go together! Rules intended to protect the most marginalised groups often end up being weaponised against them. We don't allow identity-based attacks and we call out microaggressions. /6
We want to build the best platform for infinite, threaded, social conversation. There are a bunch of elements involved in this — most of which involve making & designing software — obviously not my strength. Richard & our eng team have built a super-fun, beautiful product. /2
If a community is unkind, thoughtful people are driven away. We want to create a space where people can make new friends, be vulnerable, and have their minds changed./12 https://twitter.com/...
The rules of the new social network Telepath are simple: Be kind. Don't be mean. No harassment, and no fake news. The existential question for Telepath will be whether that's easier said than done. https://www.protocol.com/...
