Google has restored India's Paytm app after pulling it from Play Store ahead of the IPL cricket tournament; sources say for violating its gambling policies

here's the full timeline Aamir Siddiqui / XDA Developers : [Update: Reinstated] Paytm removed from Google Play Store for policy violations, likely due to its fantasy gaming platform Saritha Rai / Bloomberg : Google Restores Top India Payment App After One-Day Suspension Adamya Sharma / Android Authority : Paytm accuses Google of anti-competitive behavior, app reinstated on Play Store Jitendra Soni / TechRadar : PayTM and PayTM First Games apps are no more available on the Play Store - Here's why Sankalp Phartiyal / Reuters : Google removes Paytm mobile app from store over policy violations Tweets: @cnbctv18live : #Paytm out of Google Play Store. Google: We don't allow online casinos/support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting. It includes if app leads consumers to an external website that allows them to participate in paid tournaments to win real money/cash prizes https://twitter.com/... Vijay Shekhar Sharma / @vijayshekhar : Thanks everyone for your support! Paytm App is back, live in Play Store. 🙏🏼 We launched a UPI CashBack campaign this morning. Our app got suspended by Google for this. India, you decide if giving cash back is gambling. 🇮🇳 https://twitter.com/... Sreyashi Dey / @sreyashidey : This after @Google said it won't endorse any gambling app. In the meantime @Paytm issues statement. https://twitter.com/... Abhishek Baxi / @baxiabhishek : The Paytm ban comes on the anniversary of the Google Pay launch (then called, Google Tez). Ouch. :D https://twitter.com/... Madhav Chanchani / @madhavchanchani : And afaik DraftKings and FanDuel - US fantasy gaming platforms - are allowed on the Google Play Store in the USA. So this block on fantasy gaming platforms is somewhat India specific, not a global policy https://twitter.com/... @etnowlive : #ETNOWExclusive | This is monolithic abuse of power in a startup ecosystem, says @Paytm's @VijayShekhar to ET NOW's @NayantaraRai @GoogleIndia @Google @GooglePlay #PaytmRemoved #GooglePlay https://twitter.com/... @etnowlive : .@Paytm's @vijayshekhar: We want the app back on the Google Playstore for now @GoogleIndia @Google @GooglePlay #PaytmRemoved #GooglePlay https://twitter.com/... Nikhil Pahwa / @nixxin : Whoa! FIFS, which has Dream11 founder has its chairperson, says that they complained to Google about Paytm. https://twitter.com/... Dream11 isn't on the Play store. Hasn't been. So this is Dream11 vs Paytm. Huge. Google isn't without support then. Bring out the popcorn. (8/n) Nikhil Pahwa / @nixxin : Where is Google hypocritical? Fantasy games not allowed on the play store. But they can advertise on Google search. Cc @vijayshekhar Top of the list is an app they banned today. https://twitter.com/... Kawaljit Singh Bedi / @kawaljit : Oh, “Repeat violation”? I was wondering why Google didn't give an opportunity to Paytm to fix any issue before yanking it. https://twitter.com/... Chandra R. Srikanth / @chandrarsrikant : Haven't seen @vijayshekhar this agitated and upset in a long time. https://twitter.com/... Sumanth Raghavendra / @sumanthr : #Google dropped #Paytm from its app store because of scratch stickers offering cashback? Seriously? Doesn't Google Pay offer the exact same “casino” incentive for every transaction in its own app? Nikhil Pahwa / @nixxin : The removal of Paytm and Paytm First Games from the Google Play Store covers two interesting #techpolicy issues: 1. Platform Power: Google and Apple have an operating system duopoly. Remember that you can't upload an app store app on the Google Play Store. Thus (1/n) Abhishek Baxi / @baxiabhishek : I have little sympathy for Paytm but this incident reflects on too much power app stores wield. A primary payment app for millions of Indians, especially small merchants, is almost an essential service and cannot go bust suddenly. https://twitter.com/... Chandra R. Srikanth / @chandrarsrikant : Even as Paytm works to get back on Play Store, the move yet again shows the power of Google. It's a platform and also has a product Google Pay that competes with Paytm. Apparently the issue here was Paytm's cricket sticker Cashbacks. No recourse except complying with Google https://twitter.com/... Shashikant Kore / @kshashi : On one hand, Google treats policy violation by a hugely popular app just the way it would treat any obscure app. OTOH, the banned app happens to be direct competitor. So, a warning would have been nice. Paytm should have been more careful, all the same. https://techcrunch.com/... Digbijay Mishra / @digbijaymishra1 : In Paytm being taken down by Google, another factor to look at—Paytm's app is also how most would access its banking services. So, that's a RBI regulated entity's core app being taken down. @cnbctv18live : Sources On #Paytm's removal from Google #PlayStore: #Google had notified developers a few days back. @Google continues to be in touch with #developers to bring #app back on the play store https://twitter.com/... Subrahmanyam Kvj / @sub8u : When you are the judge, and the competitor. Not the first, won't be the last. https://twitter.com/... @__eater__ : Google bans Google from Google's App platform https://twitter.com/... Martijn Grooten / @martijn_grooten : Google now formally bans stalkerware from Google Play https://www.zdnet.com/... I disagree with @campuscodi: I don't really think they leave a giant loophole, for they require child monitoring apps to show persistent notifications. Most stalkerware doesn't use Google Play though.
