Beyond thrilled to finally share a sneak peek of our Facebook partnership with Ray-Ban! Our first smart glasses will launch next year, and that's just the beginning... The future will be a classic and it's coming in 2021 😎 https://twitter.com/...

I have never been able to reconcile the drive companies have to make smart glasses a thing with any kind of real consumer demand for them. And no, this isn't a case of companies being so innovative that they know what people want before they want it. Get new ideas. https://twitte…

I appreciate FB underselling their “smart glasses”... the only detail we have is they are in fact glasses. And Ray Ban is somehow involved. I guess this is the Anti-Magic Leap approach to product announcements... (ie underpromise) https://www.theverge.com/...

Winning in consumer AR won't just be about who has the best technology; Apple's big advantage is that it is probably the only big tech company that consumers will trust when it comes to privacy issues related to wearing AR glasses. https://twitter.com/...

Can't wait to see Facebook's TOS for their new AR glasses. Will it be like Oculus? A little more invasive each year—until all your software stops working, unless agree to let a Facebook record every moment of your life? #BlackMirror is a LOT closer than you think. https://twitter…

Facebook confirms its smart glasses coming next year w/ Ray-Ban are not an AR device. Won't have integrated display, so closer to Snap Spectacles or Amazon Echo Frames. Project Aria is the research group working toward *true* AR glasses. https://www.theverge.com/...

The hard part is building smart glasses that don't get laughed at or dirty looks Facebook needs to test these with celebrities, creators, and others considered “cool” to kill the stigma...otherwise “Face'holes” will be the new “Glass'holes” https://twitter.com/...

Facebook reveals its Project Aria smart glasses: -Will show walking directions, pop-up info on stores -Just for employees at first -Recordings will blur out faces & license plates -Still might get you beat up https://twitter.com/...

When Zuck says Luxottica is the best partner for smart glasses I can't help but wonder how it's like a monopolist tag team (one real, one aspiring). Maybe it's just me. https://www.techmeme.com/...

Facebook working with Luxotica to create a Snapchat Spectacle competitor? Zuck says that there's a multi-year partnership to develop AR glasses but no products to show off right now.

What happens to our privacy when we're wearing Facebook on our face? Facebook's launching Ray-Bans next year (without a display), and has more AR glasses tech in the lab called Project Aria. https://about.fb.com/... https://twitter.com/...

It might be unfair but I have such a hard time believing all this messaging around privacy, ethics, and building trust on #ProjectAria Talk is indeed cheap so let's see how they deliver #facebookconnect https://twitter.com/...

FRL seems to have thought deeply about privacy issues as they send test subjects into the world wearing AR-like sampling devices (eye tracking, A/V recording, 3D mapping). But did they think as hard on their company's core business model ultimately corrupting their hard work? htt…

Pleased to have played a small role on Project Aria. Congrats to the FRL team. This is a big step forward for human-oriented computing. https://tech.fb.com/...

We believe AR glasses will radically transform the way we interact with our surroundings and the way we connect at distance. The technologies we need to make this a reality are not here yet, but we are taking a step closer to this vision with Project Aria.
  • @dens Dennis Crowley on x
IMHO, super-clever strategy to use army of Facebook employees wearing R&D camera-glasses to crowdsouce a 3D model of real world. Think: Google StreetView cars, except it's people walking thru cities modeling everything in sight... inside + outside + at home + in stores, etc.
  • @boztank Boz on x
We built Project Aria with privacy in mind and we've put provisions in place around where and how we'll collect data as well as how it will be processed, used, and stored. You can learn more about Project Aria here: https://tech.fb.com/...

Today, we unveiled Project Aria—a new research effort that will help us understand how to build software & hardware necessary for AR glasses. Our vision of AR requires a foundational shift in computing technology—Project Aria is a step in that direction: https://tech.fb.com/...

Btw this comment from @boztank on VR is something at the end of my AR story but I'm thinking about- says VR already has Batman but needs more Bruce Wayne. Imagined identities vs “real ID” that it looks like FB is trying to resolve https://www.cnet.com/...

Apple yesterday versus FB VR today is a good case study of two approaches to innovation. Apple ships things that are finished, and have a complete use case, and then iterates on them and joins them up. FB is shipping work in progress to bootstrap adoption.

Okay, so... Facebook is telling us the Ray-Bans will not be AR. Aria is AR. Aria is not a prototype for the Ray-Bans. Aria is an exploration of what might come... after. The Ray-Bans are simply “smart glasses,” whatever that means. FB says they'll rely on phone display.
  • @alexeheath Alex Heath on x
The Aria glasses are packed with sensors, including front-facing cameras and mics, but they don't have displays in them that achieve true AR—overlaying graphics onto the real world. Such displays are “one of the biggest challenges we're going to have as an industry,” said Boz.
  • @alexeheath Alex Heath on x
Plenty of privacy concerns to think through with people wearing computers on their faces. FB says the glasses' data will be only used for research & that wearers will be identified and trained on how to use them in public. This tech is moving faster than most people realize!
  • @alexeheath Alex Heath on x
This is Facebook's first part of smart glasses: Project Aria. Facebook's head of AR/VR @boztank told me that about 100 Facebook staffers/contractors will start wearing these in public to gather data for future, more high-tech glasses. https://www.theinformation.com/ ... https://t…

Zuckerberg discussing the name change. Facebook is front and center in name of VR/AR. Covers larger umbrella of neural interfaces, home, software projects and AR.
