Facebook announces Oculus Quest 2, starting at $299, with a lighter design, 50% better resolution, 90Hz refresh rate, up to 256GB storage, coming October 13

for $100 less than the original. This unlocks VR for many more people and I'm proud of our team's hard work to make this happen https://twitter.com/... Kaz Nejatian / @canadakaz : The odds of me buying the next three versions of Oculus are much much higher than buying the next three iPhones or MacBooks. @panxueni : Really don't think I'll be getting a Quest 2 soon bc other than not keen on entering “the F-world”, the Quest 2 is actually worse than the Quest on controller tracking, IPD, & comfort (unless you paid the extra $50 Elite Strap. So $349's the real price) https://arstechnica.com/... Leo Gebbie / @leogebbie : Pricing the Quest 2 from $299 is a seismic move. Surely positions the device as a loss leader - shows just how strongly Facebook want to drive greater adoption of virtual reality and capture a larger share of the market. Ken Yeung / @thekenyeung : More than 35 titles on Quest that generate “millions of dollar” in revenue. Over $150 million spent on Quest content. Alex Heath / @alexeheath : FB is also announcing its new Oculus VR headset today, though that was mostly spoiled earlier this week by a slip-up on Facebook's website. I've been using it for the past couple weeks and it's pretty slick, though I still can't wear it for long without getting uncomfortable. Ken Yeung / @thekenyeung : Facebook gets into the fitness space, a bit different than Apple's Fitness+ and Peloton...it's called Oculus Moves.

Context & Ripple Effects

The Quest 2 lands a year after the original headset had already shed most of its launch compromises through an expanded library and PC VR integration — so this is less a fix-it sequel than a price-and-scale play: $100 cheaper than its predecessor while adding resolution, a 90Hz mode, and up to 256GB.

The trade-off flagged in same-day coverage is that the cheap hardware is welded to a Facebook account, with the review noting the Link cable and a better strap cost extra. Zuckerberg had already framed Oculus as the entry point to social VR in last year's interview on cracking social in VR, and the $299 price is what turns that thesis into volume.

First-order effects

  • Buyers get a $299/$399 two-tier headset on October 13, but the sticker price understates the real cost: the required Facebook login plus paid add-ons (Link cable, upgraded strap) push the effective spend above MSRP.

Second-order effects

  • The installed-base bet shifts Oculus' revenue center to content: with over $150 million already spent on Quest software and holiday titles like the Pistol Whip 2089 expansion and The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners landing day-and-date with the hardware, every discounted headset is a storefront acquisition.

Third-order effects

  • Selling hardware near or below cost to feed a software-and-social platform is expensive by design — Meta's Reality Labs later posted a $2.96B quarterly loss on just $695M revenue — and the pattern culminates in the $500 Quest 3 pushing mixed reality rather than price cuts, while Quest for Business and Work Accounts open an enterprise lane to offset consumer subsidies.

The trend: Standalone VR headsets are being priced as customer-acquisition devices for a content, social, and eventually enterprise platform, with Facebook accepting hardware losses to own the entry point.
