In China, the messaging platform blocked thousands of keywords related to the virus, a new report reveals.

The Citizen Lab report puts numbers on what began as a flood: in late January 2020, the sheer volume of coronavirus criticism briefly overwhelmed Chinese censors. By February, the state had shifted from reacting to hunting — leveraging WeChat and Twitter to track down critics of its outbreak response.

The report's contribution is granularity: over 2,000 keywords blocked on WeChat between January and May 2020, showing censorship operated at the vocabulary level, not just the account level. Weeks after the study window closed, Twitter had removed more than 170K accounts tied to Chinese influence operations pushing favorable COVID narratives abroad.

First-order effects

  • WeChat users lost access to an entire lexicon around the virus — symptom names, official responses, criticism — meaning Tencent was enforcing narrative control inside its own infrastructure at scale.

  • The same playbook extended to institutional voices: by 2022, Tencent-backed health platform DXY was blocked from Weibo, WeChat, and Douyin for criticizing the COVID fight, showing even state-aligned health media were subject to the gatekeeping apparatus.

  • Keyword-level crisis censorship hardened into a reusable template — the same blocking pattern reappeared for the Shanghai police database breach story, while coordinated bot networks took the suppression offshore onto Twitter during zero-COVID protests.

The trend: China's information control is converging on a standing crisis-censorship system where domestic platforms filter vocabulary and state-linked bot networks shape the conversation abroad.
