Samsung is quietly rebuilding Find My Mobile around the same trick that made Apple's Find My app the benchmark: enlisting other people's nearby devices to locate phones that are offline. The feature ships off by default, making the installed Galaxy base the sensor network and user consent the gating factor.

The move lands mid-race. Two months later Samsung productized it as the SmartThings Find app, extending tracking to Buds, Watches, and tablets, while Google — after earlier work on indoor positioning for Find My Device — eventually answered with its own crowd-sourced Find My Device network across the US and Canada.

First-order effects

  • Galaxy owners gain a way to locate lost or powered-down devices by routing pings through nearby strangers' Galaxy handsets — provided those owners opt in, since the relay is disabled by default.
