The notable choice is the OS — Microsoft is building its dual-screen hardware play on Android rather than a platform of its own, betting app compatibility matters more than ecosystem control for a device this experimental.
First-order effects
US buyers can preorder the Surface Duo today at $1,399, placing Microsoft's first phone-form-factor Surface at a flagship-plus price point despite lacking features like 5G or rear cameras that later models would add.
Android developers gain a new dual-screen target on store shelves, since Microsoft's two-display hinge design only pays off if apps adapt to span both panels.
Second-order effects
Demand at the launch price proved soft enough that Microsoft cut the Duo by $400 to $999 just five months later and pushed into the UK, France, Germany, and Canada — an unusually fast discount that reset expectations for the product's real market price.
The arc from $1,399 launch to discounted secondary device — by mid-2022 the Duo 2 had seen at least nine software updates and a $500 cut yet was still reviewed as best as a companion phone — suggests Microsoft's dual-screen line survives as a niche hardware experiment rather than a mainstream challenger, sustained by iteration rather than volume.
If the pattern holds, Microsoft's mobile strategy stays one of renting Android while reserving its differentiation for form factor and productivity software, not platform ownership.
The trend: Microsoft's Surface line is extending from PCs into experimental mobile form factors built on Android, with each generation priced high at launch then quickly repositioned toward a narrower productivity-niche audience.
#SurfaceDuo: Windowing Is The New Lapability - my thoughts on the how @panos_panay and team got to #SurfaceDuo, how it impacts #Android and a reminder than thinking of it as a phone won't help you understand it https://techpinions.com/...
Surface Duo has the same vibe as the original v1 Surface devices Arm & Intel. I suspect there was some buyers remorse for the people that bought into that V1. At least they don't need to worry about Apple drowning them out.
Here's what Surface Duo doesn't have: NFC Wireless Charging 5G Microsoft says it was focused on the Surface Duo's fundamentals, which includes form factor and OS experience. It wanted to build a good Surface before building a good phone with V1: https://www.windowscentral.com/ ..…
There are so many takes on Surface Duo (see @techmeme). It is crazy, that we continue to take the party line from the company and don't push them on “BUT WHY?” @panos_panay I couldn't figure out what problem does this solve for whom. https://om.co/...
I really like the notion of shortcuts to launch app combos on either screen, like calendar and email. I'm never first to the party for this sort of tech, but I'm eager to see what this dual screen form factor looks like in a couple generations. https://gizmodo.com/...
Really interesting discussion between Deepak Menon (Microsoft Office design team), and Jon Friedman (chief designer of Office 365) about Surface Duo, how and why. https://medium.com/...
The challenge with Android hardware innovation has always been that it can't require developer support, since no device is more than a tiny % of the base https://www.theverge.com/...
It's rare to design for new form factors. I sat down with Deepak Menon to discuss the research & design behind Office on Surface Duo (available for preorder today!). Here's how we've been using Duo in our own lives, and an invite to help shape the future of dual-screen experience…
They say two minds are better than one—but what about two screens? See how we're celebrating the seam with new Microsoft @Surface Duo: https://medium.com/...
Great perspective by @caro_milanesi on Surface Duo. Most are getting wrapped up in the specs but with this device you have to look at the bigger picture and where Surface is going with devices. https://twitter.com/...
Hm my last two Duo Tweets belie the fact that I'm actually really excited to try it out. I love the concept of it and the industrial design looks great to me, bezels and all. It's really going to come down to execution on those ideas.
Available for preorder in the US today, Surface Duo brings together the power of Microsoft 365 experiences and the full ecosystem of Android mobile apps into one device, with two screens that you can take anywhere. Read all about it: https://blogs.windows.com/.... #DoOneBetter
. @Surface Duo represents our vision for the next wave of mobile productivity. It brings together the power of Microsoft and the full ecosystem of Android apps into one device, with two screens that fits in your pocket. Pumped for you to check it out. https://blogs.windows.com/..…
It took Microsoft until the Surface Pro 3 to nail the hardware. I think it's easy to dismiss the Surface Duo based on its $1,400 price and hardware specs, but that entirely misses the point. Microsoft thinks foldables and dual-screens will change mobile devices like this: https:/…
This is not a phone for 99% of people. It's a phone for Surface fans. Microsoft put in what they could to make this SUPER thin device work. It's not meant for everyone. https://twitter.com/...
