Files by Google adds a PIN-encrypted folder to protect sensitive files on Android

It's aimed at users who share devices, Google says  —  The Files by Google app, which primarily gives Android users an easy way to manage files and free up space on their phone, is getting a new PIN-protected “Safe Folder” feature.

Files by Google began as Files Go, a lightweight file manager aimed at developing markets before being renamed in 2018 when it passed 30M monthly users. Safe Folder extends that base beyond storage cleanup into privacy: a PIN-encrypted space inside an app many users already open weekly, reportedly rolling out experimentally in India first per a Hindi support page.

That sequencing matters because device sharing — the use case Google explicitly names — is most common in exactly those markets. It also foreshadows the pattern Google later formalized at the OS level with Android's theft-protection suite, including Private Space for hiding sensitive data.
