This is the consumer payoff of a pipeline Google has been building since it shipped fingerprint sensor and Touch ID support to developers in Chrome 70 in 2018: biometrics moved from an API developers could call to something the browser itself uses as a gate. Since then Google has unified its credential layer piece by piece — a rebuilt password manager across Chrome and Android in 2022, the passkey sign-in rollout for Android and Chrome later that year, and biometric-verified card filling inside Google Pay in 2024.

What changes now is scope: the biometric check moves out of Google Pay and into Chrome Autofill itself, so any site's checkout on Android can be gated by the device's own unlock, while touch-to-fill extends the same one-tap pattern from cards to saved accounts. The throughline is that Chrome is absorbing the authentication step rather than handing users off to separate apps.
