Apple has started making its flagship iPhone 11 at the Foxconn plant near Chennai, the first time its manufactured a top-of-the-line model in India

The company hasn't cut prices as it also sells iPhone 11 handsets made in China in India but industry executives said that could be an option later on.

The Economic Times Writankar Mukherjee

Context & Ripple Effects

The Chennai milestone closes a loop that opened five years earlier, when Foxconn was first reported in talks to build Apple's first plant in India. What began as exploratory negotiations has now reached the top of the lineup: until now, Indian assembly covered older or mid-tier iPhones, while flagships were imported from China.

That distinction matters commercially because assembled-in-India handsets sidestep import duties on devices sold domestically, which is why industry executives tell The Economic Times a price cut on the India-built iPhone 11 is on the table even though Apple has held prices so far.

First-order effects

  • Foxconn's Chennai plant takes on final assembly of Apple's current flagship, moving part of the iPhone 11 supply chain out of China and giving Apple duty-advantaged domestic inventory for Indian sales.
  • Indian buyers get an identically priced but locally assembled iPhone 11 today, with Apple explicitly leaving open cheaper pricing on India-made units as a later option.

Second-order effects

  • If Apple uses the duty savings to cut prices on India-assembled stock, it pressures Samsung and Chinese Android vendors in the Indian premium segment without touching global pricing.
  • A proven flagship line at Chennai gives Foxconn the track record to bid for newer models, and the follow-on coverage shows exactly that path: the same plant later confirmed making iPhone 14 models, with Kuo reporting near-simultaneous India–China production starts.

Third-order effects

  • The pattern holds through to Pro-tier hardware — sources later report Foxconn rushing to build the most expensive iPhones in India for the first time — pointing to a structural diversification where India graduates from backup assembly to launch-capacity alongside China.
  • As local assembly deepens from one model toward the full range, Apple's India pricing and launch parity stop being exceptions and become part of standard supply-chain planning for the country's premium market.

The trend: iPhone manufacturing in India is climbing the product ladder from entry models to flagships, turning the country from an import market into parallel launch capacity for Apple's supply chain.
