Instagram will start letting users pin up to three comments on their posts, after testing the feature in May

Context & Ripple Effects

Pinning comments closes out a test Instagram began in May, when bulk comment deletion and mention controls shipped on iOS as part of the same anti-bullying push. It extends a control arc that started years earlier, when Instagram first let users filter comments or turn them off per post and later added tools to limit who can comment at all.

First-order effects

  • Post owners gain direct curation power over their own threads for the first time — up to three comments can be fixed to the top, which changes what every visitor reads first.

Second-order effects

  • Creators and brands will steer conversation by pinning praise, announcements, or corrections, shifting influence from whoever commented earliest to whoever the owner elevates.

Third-order effects

  • Comment sections drift from a raw chronological feed toward owner-curated surfaces, continuing Instagram's pattern of handing posters progressively finer-grained moderation levers.

The trend: Instagram is steadily converting comment sections from open feeds into creator-controlled spaces, one moderation tool at a time.

Some use cases for pinned comments: • Identify and reward advocates (brands) • Pin a strong counter argument (news) • Additional details on price, shipping, product (e-commerce) • Better version of the joke (memes) • Product testimonial (e-commerce) https://www.theverge.com/...
