Facebook will change its News Feed algorithm to prioritize news stories with original reporting and demote ones that are not transparent about their authors

Beginning today, Facebook will be updating the way news stories are ranked in its News Feed to prioritize original reporting, executives tell Axios.

Axios Sara Fischer

Context & Ripple Effects

This is the latest move in a four-year run of News Feed interventions. Facebook first put friends above publishers in its News Feed Values in mid-2016, then began training the algorithm to detect authenticity in early 2017, and by January 2018 was arguing that journalism engineered for an algorithm was marketing rather than reporting (the Motherboard critique). Each change has shifted what kind of publishing survives on the platform.

Today's update extends that logic from authenticity to provenance: ranking now rewards original reporting and penalizes stories opaque about who wrote them, making authorship transparency a distribution variable.

First-order effects

  • Publishers investing in original reporting gain feed distribution at the direct expense of outlets that rewrite others' work or publish without clear bylines — the same publishers Facebook demoted when it deprioritized same-source repeats in 2016.

Second-order effects

  • Aggregation-driven outlets must either build original-reporting capacity or accept shrinking referral traffic, while wire services and scooping publications gain leverage because every downstream pickup now carries an attribution penalty.

Third-order effects

  • Facebook's ranking signals harden into de facto industry standards: byline disclosure and sourcing become compliance requirements for reaching social audiences, with the platform effectively setting editorial policy it never formally legislated.

The trend: News Feed ranking is evolving from engagement optimization toward editorial quality judgment, with each update transferring more gatekeeping power from publishers to Facebook's algorithm.

This seems like a good policy, but “Facebook... will use artificial intelligence to analyze groups of articles on a particular story topic and identify the ones most often cited as the original source” seems worryingly gameable. https://twitter.com/...

Didn't Google try this in Google News and failed miserably at it? https://twitter.com/...

This is long overdue. We should reward ones who's done the original reporting, not the content farms who piece them together without necessarily giving credits while beating them by popularity https://www.axios.com/...

Funny that none of this stuff seemed to be a priority before 🤔 https://twitter.com/...

Facebook news feed algorithm to prioritize original reporting https://www.axios.com/... - FB will down-rank news without bylines or missing info about editorial staff on publishers' website - Will use AI to analyze articles to identify ones most often cited as original source

“Facebook says publishers could see a traffic boost from original reports, but it anticipates that most news publishers won't see significant changes to their distribution in News Feed due to the changes.” https://www.axios.com/...
