Facebook says it is globally rolling out a notification screen warning users if they try to share content that's more than 90 days old

Context & Ripple Effects

This is Facebook's second big move from ranking into pre-share intervention. Back in 2017 it started to identify and demote links from users posting more than 50 times a day, attacking spam at distribution; now it intercepts the share itself with a notification screen whenever content is more than 90 days old — a direct answer to stale articles recirculating as if current.

The pattern has been building through 2020: weeks later Facebook added an interstitial showing source and date on COVID-19 shares, and by early 2021 it was testing warnings on non-malicious sharing of viral memes for child-safety purposes. The common thread is adding deliberate friction at the moment of sharing rather than silently reordering the feed afterward.

First-order effects

  • Users globally now hit a warning screen before sharing anything older than 90 days, forcing a conscious decision that previously happened invisibly.

Second-order effects

  • Publishers of evergreen content lose incidental recirculation traffic when readers hesitate or abandon the share, while outlets dating their work clearly gain trust relative to those whose timestamps are buried.
  • Competing platforms face pressure to match the interstitial approach, since leaving old news unflagged becomes a visible gap in misinformation defenses.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, pre-share warnings generalize across content types and platforms — shifting platform responsibility from curating what users see to labeling what they pass along, a structural move toward layered trust signals embedded in the sharing flow itself.

The trend: Platforms are moving misinformation defense upstream from feed ranking to friction at the point of sharing, with date-contextual warnings becoming standard infrastructure.
