Overall, remote learning this spring didn't work: schools disagree on fair student assessment, students lack equal access to technology, teaching got harder

The pandemic forced schools into a crash course in online education.  Problems piled up quickly.  ‘I find it hectic and stressful’ Tweets: @afrankhistory , @trumwill , @econ_marshall , @baddogs4343 , @erin_bartram , @motheroftheses , @ichheissemikey , @beijingpalmer , @jrosenworcel , @mdudas , @biblioracle , @orrchris , @cszabla , @mattrosoff , @karstenw , and @hoofnagle Tweets: Andrew Frank / @afrankhistory : Ha ha ha ha. I didn't know the @WSJ ran satire. Reminder: Spring was triage. Remote/online education requires tremendous preparation. We had a week. And we had to retrofit courses that were already created and 1/2 way complete. And still most classes were still a success! https://twitter.com/... Will Truman / @trumwill : Review learning was never going to be a good idea for most but this was not exactly a carefully designed pilot program. https://www.wsj.com/... @econ_marshall : Unfortunately just because something failed doesn't mean it won't be expanded. (See mass incarceration and privatization.) Remote learning fits the agenda of neoliberalized education. https://twitter.com/... @baddogs4343 : As teachers, we had very little time to prepare. We are in professional development to do better if (when) the second wave comes. You need to take that into consideration. And the kids were not prepared AT ALL for that type of shift. https://twitter.com/... Erin Bartram / @erin_bartram : When did we test out remote learning? Certainly not this spring. https://twitter.com/... Carly M. Lesoski, PhD / @motheroftheses : I'm not sure I can even bear to click on this this article. Simply the premise is ridiculously disingenuous. This was not remote or online learning. It was damage control, crisis management, anything but online learning. https://twitter.com/... Mikey / @ichheissemikey : “We all know there's no substitute for learning in a school setting, and many students are struggling and falling far behind where they should be” This is 100% not true. Learning online is great! Problem is schools don't invest in creating methods to make it worth. IT is support https://twitter.com/... James Palmer / @beijingpalmer : I'm not certain you can say ‘the results are in for remote learning’ as opposed to ‘the results are in for remote learning set up at the last minute under panic conditions’ https://twitter.com/... Jessica Rosenworcel / @jrosenworcel : Our national experiment with remote learning hasn't been easy. But for millions of students the virtual classroom has been locked because they don't have internet service at home. We have to fix this #homeworkgap because no child should be left offline. https://www.wsj.com/... Mike Dudas / @mdudas : Can confirm. @NYCSchools did their best, but with only 30-45 mins of structured connection to teacher and classmates daily, remote learning hasn't been a success. In-person teaching is needed by the Fall. Hoping NYC can determine a safe, effective plan. https://www.wsj.com/... John Warner / @biblioracle : Another article that equates test scores with “learning.” How can we break out of this frame and have a deeper, more meaningful conversation. https://twitter.com/... Christopher Orr / @orrchris : As the parent of two high-schoolers, I could've told you that. https://twitter.com/... Csz / @cszabla : “students nationwide will return to school in the fall with roughly 70% of learning gains in reading relative to a typical school year, and less than 50% in math” https://twitter.com/... Matt Rosoff / @mattrosoff : Hard agree. https://twitter.com/... Karsten Weide / @karstenw : “Hectic and stressful.” Students, teachers and parents all think the nation's big experiment in remote learning was a failure. https://www.wsj.com/... via @WSJ Chris Hoofnagle / @hoofnagle : WSJ: “This spring, America took an involuntary crash course in remote learning. With the school year now winding down, the grade from students, teachers, parents and administrators is already in: It was a failure.” https://www.wsj.com/...?
