Sony says it is on track to launch PlayStation 5 this year and has begun manufacturing the console, announces a games-focused event on June 4

Latest PlayStation console expected to launch globally in the final quarter of 2020  —  Sony's PlayStation 5 is “on track” …

Financial Times Tim Bradshaw

Context & Ripple Effects

This closes a two-year confirmation loop: Sony first acknowledged work on a PS4 successor in late 2018 without naming it, then committed in October 2019 to a holiday 2020 launch built around a haptic controller. The reassurance repeated two weeks ago in Sony's Q4 earnings, where operating profit fell 57% year over year — making the console the one piece of unambiguously good news in the quarter.

What changes today is that 'on track' becomes physical: manufacturing has started, and a June 4 games-focused event sets the marketing runway for a global launch in the final quarter of 2020. The games lineup, not the hardware spec, is now the story Sony wants told before holiday shelves fill.

First-order effects

  • Sony's launch window is now locked to a manufacturing reality rather than a promise — the holiday 2020 date announced last October survives contact with a quarter in which the company's profit fell 57%, and the June 4 event shifts the narrative from earnings damage control to software lineup.

Second-order effects

  • Launch-year supply becomes the binding constraint: the manufacturing start announced here is what produced the 4.5M units Sony shipped worldwide in 2020 — a modest number that later forced Sony to ramp PS5 production as supply chain issues eased into 2022.

Third-order effects

  • The console launch anchors Sony's installed-base flywheel — the 125 million PlayStation monthly active users reported later depend on hardware cadence — and a supply-constrained launch pushes the ecosystem's economics toward services and content rather than unit sales.

The trend: Console launches are shifting from hardware events to content-led campaigns, with manufacturing capacity — not the launch date — becoming the variable that shapes an entire console generation's early economics.

Sony has told PS4 developers they must ensure PlayStation 5 compatibility from July, and it's up to devs to make this work - just as it's up to of the devs of older games to ensure they sort back compat issues. Full story: https://www.eurogamer.net/...

Damn. This means that technically Ghost & TLOU2. don't really have to be compatible with PS5 they have already been submitted for certification. So any game that is technically gold today or going gold in the next month don't have to work for PS5. But I expect TLOU & GHOST to be.…
