Instagram will start sharing revenue with creators through IGTV ads and badges on Live, splitting 55% of the revenue, starting with 200 partners next week

And purchasable Badges in Instagram Live  —  For the first time in its history, Instagram will start sharing revenue with creators through ads …

The Verge Ashley Carman

Context & Ripple Effects

This launch was months in the making: TechCrunch reported in February that Instagram had internally prototyped an Instagram Partner Program letting IGTV creators earn from ads, and today that prototype becomes a real program — 55% of IGTV ad revenue and Live badge sales going to creators, starting with 200 partners.

It marks Instagram's first-ever revenue split with creators, and the corpus shows it is only the opening move: by October Instagram rolls out premium badges on Live as an additional fan-support layer, and by mid-2021 Facebook and Instagram are paying influencers cash bonuses for hitting milestones like selling badges.

First-order effects

  • The initial 200 partners gain a direct income stream from IGTV ads and Live badges at a 55% split, ending Instagram's long-standing position of offering creators audience but no revenue share.
  • Facebook/Instagram now has a YouTube-style rev-share structure inside its own apps, giving its top creators a financial reason to prioritize IGTV and Live over rival platforms.

Second-order effects

  • Competing short-video platforms face pressure to match or beat the 55% split with their own creator payouts, turning creator monetization terms into a visible competitive lever rather than a back-office detail.
  • Fans become a second revenue line alongside advertisers: purchasable Live badges let creators monetize superfans directly, which Instagram then extends with premium badges and milestone-based bonus incentives.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, major social platforms converge on stacked creator economies — ad rev-share plus fan payments plus incentive bonuses — where retention of top creators depends less on reach alone and more on total earnings per creator.

The trend: Social platforms are shifting from pure reach-for-creators to layered monetization programs — ad splits, fan payments, and performance bonuses — as the primary contest for top talent.

The revenue share on IGTV ads is 55%, same as YouTube. The way it works: creators post their previews in the main insta feed. After 15 seconds Insta asks the user to jump to IGTV to keep watching. If they jump they see an ad first.

It's a good time to do it, since live video views are up 70% as people use it to replace things they would be doing in person for $ (fitness classes, performances, drawing tutorials, cooking shows). Now you can tip 99 cents, $1.99 or $4.99 to support.

Instagram has said for more than a year that IGTV would be the first place it monetizes, and that day has arrived. The company is relying on people to approve monetizable content with the goal being to move that to software / humans eventually https://www.theverge.com/...
