Facebook's Libra rebrands its wallet provider, Calibra, to Novi

In the approach to the launch of Facebook's Libra payments ecosystem, a key subsidiary has been given a new name and a new look.  —  According to an announcement on Tuesday, Libra's wallet provider Calibra has now been rebranded to Novi

CoinDesk Sebastian Sinclair

Context & Ripple Effects

When Facebook unveiled Libra and its Calibra subsidiary in June 2019, the wallet carried the company's own name — and absorbed much of the regulatory backlash that followed. The May 2020 rename to Novi strips the Facebook association off the consumer-facing product, part of a broader retreat from the original branding that culminated in the Libra Association's own rebrand to Diem seven months later.

First-order effects

  • Facebook's planned standalone iOS/Android wallet and its in-app versions for WhatsApp and Messenger will ship under the Novi name rather than Calibra, resetting consumer recognition just ahead of the ecosystem's launch.

Second-order effects

  • The de-Facebooked naming gives the Libra Association's other members cover to stay involved without co-branding with Facebook — the same logic that later drove the Diem rename — while partners like Coinbase, which eventually won custody work for the wallet's US and Guatemala pilot, deal with a neutral-sounding counterparty.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, big-tech payment infrastructure gets marketed under deliberately unaffiliated brands, separating the distribution platform (Messenger, WhatsApp) from the regulated financial product — a structure regulators and banking partners increasingly demand.

The trend: Big-tech crypto projects are systematically shedding founder branding — Calibra to Novi, Libra to Diem — to survive regulator and partner scrutiny.

Facebook “said that the new name was inspired by the Latin words ‘novus’ and ‘via,’ which mean ‘new’ and ‘way,’ respectively. Novi Financial is the new name of the Facebook subsidiary that will develop the company's digital wallet.” https://www.theverge.com/...

Calibra, the digital wallet Facebook is developing for Libra, has now rebranded to Novi. The new name ‘was inspired by the Latin words “novus” for “new” and “via” for “way.”’ https://about.fb.com/...

In other news: Facebook has renamed its blockchain division because “Calibra,” the FB team building a digital wallet, sounded too much like Libra, the name of the currency FB invented but no longer controls. Calibra is out. Novi is in. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

JUST IN: Facebook @Libra_'s wallet provider Calibra is now called Novi. The new entity has also said its digital wallet will allow “instant” payments through WhatsApp and Messenger. Via @Sebsinclair1989 https://www.coindesk.com/...
