Truework, which helps banks, rental agencies, and others securely check employment details of applicants online, raises $30M Series B led by Activant Capital

As organizations look for safe and efficient ways of running their services in the new global paradigm of increased social distancing …

TechCrunch Ingrid Lunden

Context & Ripple Effects

In May 2020, with lenders and landlords unable to meet applicants in person, Truework raised a $30M Series B from Activant Capital to scale its API-based employment and income verification for banks and rental agencies. The raise positioned it in the same trust layer that Checkr had been building since its own $40M Series B in 2016 and $100M Series C in 2018, when it standardized background screening for on-demand workforces.

The five-year arc matters: what was a standalone verification API in 2020 ended up absorbed by the adjacent screening platform — Checkr acquired Truework in April 2025 after it had raised over $125M at a ~$480M valuation.

First-order effects

  • Banks, rental agencies, and other Truework customers can run applicant employment and income checks remotely during social-distancing conditions, replacing manual employer phone calls with an API call.
  • Activant Capital gains a lead position in the income-and-employment-verification category at the moment demand for contactless verification spikes.

Second-order effects

  • Checkr, whose screening platform serves many of the same hiring workflows, faces a choice between building its own verification layer or buying one — the path it ultimately took with its 2025 acquisition of Truework.
  • Adjacent fintechs serving workers' financial lives, such as earned-wage-access provider Clair, benefit from cheaper programmatic income data instead of slower manual proofs.

Third-order effects

  • Verification is consolidating into bundled platform infrastructure: standalone trust APIs become features inside broader screening stacks, shifting pricing power to whoever owns the full applicant-workflow relationship.
  • If the pattern holds, every hiring and lending decision point gets an embedded 'verify once, reuse everywhere' data layer — with consolidation, not proliferation, defining who controls access to it.

The trend: Employment and income verification is consolidating from independent API startups into full-stack background-screening platforms, with Checkr's 2025 purchase of Truework the clearest endpoint so far.

Interesting take on how to approach one aspect of your ID management, which will continue to be a hot area in the years to come. Very telling that 2 cofounders came from LinkedIn. tip @Techmeme https://twitter.com/...
