Robin Hanson / @robinhanson : So if I get a Playstation 5 next year, I can play games that look and sound this good. And I probably would. A lot. At the expense of all my other goals. Seith / @seithcg : That's mind boggling: “Hardware accelerated ray tracing [was] not a part of the PS5 tech demo revealed today”. So does that means it's mostly a software dynamic GI, purely based on their temporal magic (maybe like Crytek's)?! That's super exciting! https://www.eurogamer.net/... @doom49 : Well there it is! UNREAL ENGINE 5 is literally making RTX ray tracing unneeded. https://www.youtube.com/... Brian Tong / @briantong : Now THAT'S Next-Gen. Now you can see why I said that. Quixel's Megascans are indeed being used on Unreal Engine 5 in this demo for PS5/Next Gen. https://www.eurogamer.net/... https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/... @swiftonsecurity : Samaritan was 9 years ago. It required 10x the power of a then-current console. It's been awhile since I've been really impressed by a real-time demo. This is truly next-gen capability. https://twitter.com/... Kevin Rose / @kevinrose : after watching this demo, I have little doubt we're living in a simulation... imagine this technology 25/50/100 years from now coupled with artificial intelligence... cc: @elonmusk @joerogan https://www.theverge.com/... Alex Tumay / @alextumay : Been fooled by demos too many times https://twitter.com/... Rod Breslau / @slasher : your move, Valve @jaymcastello : Tim Sweeney going “the state of the world is a little bit broken right now” and me being like. right. there's a pandemic. maybe even the rise of fascism. and then him being like “if you look at the app store there are so many games” Nibel / @nibellion : Unreal Engine 5 details - can use movie assets that consist of hundreds of millions or billions of polygons - new dynamic GI solution called Lumen - no LODs or pop-ins - Out in 2021, supports current-gen and next-gen devices + iOS, Android, Mac and PC https://www.unrealengine.com/ ... https://twitter.com/... Miraculous Maku / @redmakuzawa : Even if that was just an example of what Unreal Engine 5 can do, I think it was smart that Sony teamed up with Epic to present it on PlayStation 5. It was gameplay tech demo recorded on the console. Xbox honestly should have done something similar to show capability of Series X. https://twitter.com/... Geoff Keighley / @geoffkeighley : This. Is. PlayStation 5. In Real Time. And it's gameplay of a new demo created by @epicgames https://twitter.com/...
Context & Ripple Effects
Epic's reveal pairs two moves at once: a next-gen graphics showcase — UE5 running on a PlayStation 5 dev system after what Sweeney describes as close work with Sony — and Epic Online Services shipping the same day, so crossplay tooling arrives before the engine itself does in 2021. That accessibility play extends a fight dating back to Unity's free full-featured version in Unity 5, which set the bar for no-friction engine adoption.
The arc since then validates the bet: by late 2022 Epic claimed over half of all announced PS5 and Xbox Series X/S games run on Unreal, up from 48% that spring, and Sweeney framed UE5's Nanite rendering as a building block for the metaverse in his launch-era interview. The 2026 plan to unify UE5 with Unreal Editor for Fortnite under UE6 is the direct descendant of this announcement.
First-order effects
- Sony gets a launch-cycle showcase built explicitly on its hardware, while studios targeting PS5, Xbox Series X, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android get a single announced engine spanning all of them.
- Studios can adopt Epic Online Services' crossplay tools immediately, without waiting for UE5's 2021 arrival — and Fortnite is already slated to migrate to the new engine that year.
Second-order effects
- Unity is pressured to match both the free-access model it pioneered and Epic's newly bundled online-services layer, or cede next-generation mindshare at exactly the moment teams pick engines for the coming console cycle.
- Fortnite's planned migration makes Epic its own engine's largest customer, dogfooding UE5 at a scale no licensee can and feeding fixes back into the tool every competitor's developers use.
Third-order effects
- If the 50%+ announced-games share holds, engine choice consolidates around Unreal on consoles, handing Epic leverage over Sony and Microsoft, whose platforms increasingly depend on its tooling.
- The structure revealed here — engine plus free online services plus a first-party flagship — is the template that culminates in UE6 unifying UE5 with Unreal Editor for Fortnite, turning the engine from a product into the substrate of Epic's platform ambitions.
The trend: Game engines are consolidating into cross-platform service platforms, with Epic binding each engine generation to a console cycle and wrapping it in its own online infrastructure.
