Design software startup Figma raises $50M Series D led by Andreessen Horowitz at a $2B valuation

Alex Konrad / Forbes :

Forbes Alex Konrad

Context & Ripple Effects

Figma's round closes fast: Forbes reported talks with Andreessen Horowitz less than two weeks before the $50M Series D landed at a $2B valuation. That is roughly 4.5x the $440M post-money Series C from early 2019, and it caps an arc that began when Figma positioned itself as a browser-based alternative to Adobe's desktop software.

The investor rotation matters as much as the price: Greylock led the Series A, and a16z now takes the lead seat at the top of the cap table. Within about fourteen months, Figma would go on to raise $200M at $10B — quintupling again — which makes this Series D the midpoint of a steep re-rating rather than a peak.

First-order effects

  • Figma banks $50M of growth capital at a $2B valuation, giving it runway to scale its cloud-based collaborative design tools while a16z replaces Greylock as lead investor.

Second-order effects

  • Adobe's desktop-installed design franchise faces a rival whose entire product runs in the browser and whose valuation growth signals that buyers are moving toward real-time collaboration over file-based workflows.
  • Competing design-tool startups must now answer a $2B benchmark for cloud-native collaboration, pressuring their own fundraising terms and pricing against a well-capitalized challenger.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds — $440M to $2B to $10B in roughly two years — interface design consolidates around browser-native platforms, and the durable question becomes whether desktop-software incumbents can rebuild collaboration into their own products before the workflow shift locks in.

The trend: Design software is re-rating around cloud-native collaboration, with each funding round pulling buyers further from desktop-file workflows and forcing incumbents like Adobe to respond.

I'm excited to share that @figmadesign has raised a $50M Series D led by @a16z! This capital helps us invest in our core + explore new ways to serve users. We couldn't have done this without the support of our global community. Thank you + stay safe 💜 https://www.figma.com/...

The new @figmadesign financing is the headline, and is a great milestone - but the real story is the amazing progress that Figma and the community around it has made and will make to open up and democratize design. We are better when we collaborate. ❤️👊 https://www.figma.com/...

Couldn't imagine going back to using anything other than Figma in our design process at this point, this raise is well deserved as they scale up to take on the industry's behemoths https://www.forbes.com/...

Congrats to @zoink, @evanwallace and team! I've said it before, but never to them: I think the @figmadesign team are the best-executing developers of web/browser-based software out there, and have been for a few years. Really, really incredible craft. https://twitter.com/...

Back in 2015 @sippey intro'ed me to @zoink. He was working on a design tool, and I was working an idea around product documentation. Eventually scrapped my idea, but his is now the best design tool for teams, and they (@figmadesign) announced a big round today. Bravo team! 👏🏼 htt…

“That was the decade of code. Now, we are moving into the decade of design: One where design, not just code, is at the center of product development and successful organizations.” Peter Levine on our investing in @Figmadesign and team: https://a16z.com/...

Design is now as essential as code, and it's a multiplayer game. Excited to be partnering with @figmadesign - esp at a time when healthcare access, payments, and care delivery experiences are in dire need of being redesigned from the ground up. https://twitter.com/...

Interesting to hear that a major motivation for Figma's latest round was increasing the perceived valuation and widening the option pool to improve its ability to hire top talent https://www.forbes.com/...

Figma is a classic distruptive technology. It was cheaper and less capable than Photoshop (90%+ marketshare) so it was easy to dismiss. But it was playing a new game, optimizing around new goals. Over time it became more capable, and now it's the new standard. Congrats to Dylan. …

$50 on $2B is less than 2.5% of equity. It doesn't feel like that much money for a Series D (pre-IPO capitalization?) https://twitter.com/...

New Figma investors Peter Levine and @pmarca of @a16z see parallels to GitHub in Figma's growth. “We're moving from what I would call the decade of code to the decade of design. Products are going to be design led, as opposed to code led,” Levine says. https://www.forbes.com/...

Absolutely loved my experience using Figma with a remote software team. Felt instinctively like the way design collaboration should be done. https://twitter.com/...

Now valued at $2 billion, design software startup Figma is eyeing acquisitions and a push into “visual communication,” CEO Dylan Field exclusively tells @Forbes. https://www.forbes.com/...
