Three weeks after announcing the vote would happen, the FCC has unanimously adopted its proposal to open the entire 6GHz band to unlicensed use — a decision first teed up on April 2 with an explicit nod to surging Wi-Fi demand. The move more than doubles the unlicensed spectrum available to Wi-Fi and clears the runway for Wi-Fi 6E hardware the industry expects to ship within the year.

The significance is bigger than one rulemaking: this is the second time in four years the FCC has converted large swaths of spectrum for new uses, following its 2016 opening of millimeter-wave bands above 24GHz for 5G. And the 6GHz decision itself proved to be only a starting point — later coverage shows the band being carved open further for headsets and wearables.

    An enormous swath of radio spectrum is coming to Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 6E & many other technologies: it's unlicensed spectrum in the US) after today's @FCC vote. It's higher frequency 6GHz that has a harder time penetrating walls, floors, etc, though. https://www.cnet.com/...
