Today, in a unanimous vote, the Federal Communications Commission adopted a proposal that opens the 6GHz band for unlicensed Wi-Fi use.

The FCC's unanimous vote follows its April 2 announcement that it would consider opening the entire 6GHz band to unlicensed use, a response to surging Wi-Fi demand. The decision hands Wi-Fi more than 1,200MHz of new spectrum — the largest single addition in years — and sets the stage for the Wi-Fi Alliance's Wi-Fi 6E certification program that followed within months.

The move also laid groundwork for later spectrum fights: by 2023 the FCC would approve an industry petition led by Apple, Meta, Google, and Microsoft for 6GHz access for AR and VR headset tethering, and in 2024 it opened the full band to very-low-power devices. This vote is the hinge on which all of that turned.
