Facebook to launch a dedicated gaming app to let users create and watch live game streams, available on Android on Monday and on iOS when Apple approves it

Video games are surging in popularity in the pandemic.  So Facebook is rolling out an app designed for creating and watching live gameplay.

New York Times Seth Schiesel

Context & Ripple Effects

Facebook has been assembling this product piece by piece: a Games SDK in 2018 to embed livestreaming into PC games, a beta standalone Android app for its Fb.gg hub that same fall, then a personalized Gaming tab inside the main app and a plan to pull Instant Games out of Messenger on iOS. The new dedicated app is the culmination — a full creation-and-viewing surface no longer buried in the main Facebook experience.

First-order effects

  • Android users get the app Monday, while iOS users wait on Apple's review — meaning Facebook's launch audience is split by platform from day one.
  • Game streamers gain a dedicated broadcast and discovery surface inside Facebook's ecosystem, competing directly for creators who currently stream elsewhere.

Second-order effects

  • Apple's approval gate becomes the story's pivot: if review drags, Facebook loses the iPhone audience at exactly the moment pandemic-driven viewership peaks, pressuring rivals to court those viewers instead.
  • A later data point in the coverage shows how this tension resolves — Facebook ultimately reached iPhones via a progressive web app for its cloud gaming service, sidestepping the App Store entirely.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, App Store review becomes a strategic variable in every major platform launch, pushing large developers toward web-based distribution when native approval is slow or restrictive.
  • Live game streaming consolidates around a handful of platform-owned hubs — Facebook, and whoever answers — rather than remaining a feature inside general social apps.

The trend: Live game streaming is graduating from embedded features to standalone platform products, with app-store gatekeepers like Apple increasingly shaping where and how those launches land.

Facebook trying to launch their own copycat Twitch platform... Don't think it'll catch on too much. But we will see! Probably want to get into game streaming service in future too. https://www.theverge.com/...

@Tocelot @Facebook @Twitch Am very curious how this experiment goes. Have a feeling it could do very well in developing markets that FB is doing well, more so than the places where Twitch is the established player for streaming.

@Tocelot @Facebook @Twitch I thibk fb see gaming as one of the biggest vertically integrated networks where consumers are behaving inherently different than on the main apps. Likely this is an indicator of where the future of social is headed and so getting gaming right is key. T…

So @Facebook is launching a dedicated gaming app on Monday! “More than 700M of its 2.5B monthly users already [engage] with gaming content.” Looks to be focused on livestreaming & mobile in particular, a platform that's under-represented on @Twitch https://www.nytimes.com/...

Do you want gaming livestreaming numbers? I put a bunch of them in here. Super here for the Actual Streamer Wars between Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Facebook. https://twitter.com/...

I'm sure my Facebook friends don't want to watch me destroying Magicite dungeons in Final Fantasy Record Keeper, but I might subject them to it if this app allows it. https://www.nytimes.com/...
