Qualcomm licenses tech from BASF which relies not only on the shapes of faces but on the detection of live skin itself and may be competitive with Face ID

Qualcomm has spent years assembling a biometric sensing stack around ultrasound: the Snapdragon Sense ID work announced in 2015, the 3D Sonic Sensor for under-display scanning, and the ultrasonic scanner shipped inside the Galaxy S10's display. In December it widened the touch target with a larger-area in-screen sensor.

The BASF license fills the gap that fingerprint hardware never covered: facial authentication. By licensing chemistry-derived liveness detection — verifying live skin rather than just face geometry — Qualcomm gains a licensable answer to Apple's Face ID for Android OEMs, at a moment when its relationships with Apple are already under strain per the related coverage.
