Facebook says it has developed a more efficient ML tool to spot fake accounts, which has already helped take down 6.6B such accounts in the last year

Facebook has been running this fight since at least 2017, when it rolled out pattern-analysis tech to find fake accounts used for misinformation, malware, and page-ranking manipulation. By late 2018 it was deleting 1.3B fake accounts in six months — and admitting creation was outpacing deletion. The new ML tool's 6.6B annual takedowns show the enforcement machine scaling roughly fivefold, but the company's own framing — that it may never win — is the real news.

The credibility problem predates the tool: a [[a:938102|2019 analysis found Facebook's reported active-fake-account estimates were far smaller than its takedown numbers]], a gap that bigger enforcement figures widen rather than close. That tension between volume-claimed-deleted and accounts-admitted-active is what regulators and advertisers will read into today's announcement.
