Vine co-founder Dom Hofmann launches Byte, a Vine-like short-form video app, on iOS and Android, aims to start its partner program to pay creators “soon”
Two years after Vine's co-founder Dom Hofmann announced he was building a successor to the short-form video app, today Byte makes its debut on iOS and Android.

Context & Ripple Effects
Byte closes a five-year loop for Dom Hofmann: an earlier 2015 private beta of Byte was a collage-sharing experiment, and the current app grew out of his 2018 'v2' successor plan before opening creator registrations ahead of a spring 2019 target that slipped through a 100-invite closed beta into today's full iOS and Android launch.
The launch matters because Vine's downfall is attributed to failing to build relationships with its top creators — which is why the promise of a partner program paying creators "soon" is the load-bearing claim here, not the looping-video format itself.
First-order effects
Creators get a new short-form video outlet with a stated path to payment, directly targeting the creator-retention failure that contributed to Vine's collapse.
Hofmann's team now has to convert launch attention into retention while standing up the partner program it has committed to publicly.
Second-order effects
Early traction — roughly 1.3M downloads in Byte's first week, 70% US — gives the app enough scale that established short-form video platforms face a rival courting the same creators with monetization promises.
If Byte pays creators before incumbents match the terms, top looping-video talent gains leverage to split their output across platforms or negotiate better deals.
Third-order effects
The pattern points toward creator compensation becoming the competitive axis for short-form video apps, with platform loyalty bought through partner programs rather than network effects alone — though whether Byte's program sustains at scale is unproven.
The trend: Short-form video is being rebuilt around direct creator payment, as successors like Byte try to fix the creator-relationship failures that killed Vine.
dear friends, today we're bringing back 6-second looping videos and a new community for people who love them. it's called byte and it's both familiar and new. we hope it'll resonate with people who feel something's been missing. http://byte.co/
Somebody also registered my Twitter handle on Byte with a generic headshot and no content. If I was a spammer I would register every checkmark Twitter handle to sell or spam later. Bootstrapping a trustworthy namespace on a social network in 2020 is going to be really tough. http…

Imagine being the Vine founder (and having effectively invented TikTok) and now needing to relaunch your app because Twitter didn't know what to do with it in the first place https://twitter.com/...
