Vine co-founder Dom Hofmann launches Byte, a Vine-like short-form video app, on iOS and Android, aims to start its partner program to pay creators “soon”

Two years after Vine's co-founder Dom Hofmann announced he was building a successor to the short-form video app, today Byte makes its debut on iOS and Android.

TechCrunch Josh Constine

Context & Ripple Effects

Byte closes a five-year loop for Dom Hofmann: an earlier Byte private beta for iPhone back in 2015 was a collage app, not video, before Hofmann reworked the idea into v2, his detailed Vine successor with 6.5-second loops, Teams, and better moderation. Creator registrations opened in late 2018 with a spring 2019 target, then slipped into a closed beta of 100 invites that ran most of last year.

First-order effects

  • Short-form creators get a new home built around looping video, and the promised partner program directly targets what the corpus says killed Vine: its failure to build relationships with top creators.

Second-order effects

  • The launch's early traction — Sensor Tower counted ~1.3M downloads in Byte's first week, 70% US — gives creators evidence there is an audience worth splitting their posting across, pressuring incumbent short-form apps to defend their creator bases with monetization of their own.

Third-order effects

  • If Byte's partner program proves that a small looping-video app can sustain direct creator payouts, short-form platforms will increasingly compete on revenue share and creator relations rather than format alone — the exact axis where Vine collapsed.

The trend: Short-form video is consolidating around creator monetization as the competitive weapon, with Vine's own collapse as the cautionary case every successor must answer.
