My understanding on this WSJ story is that WhatsApp *still does* plan to sell ads inside its Status feature. But sounds like those plans have been postponed. There was thinking Status ads might arrive in 2020, but now likely won't come til at least 2021 https://www.wsj.com/...

so you're telling me that the original founders knew what they were talking about? CRAZY! https://twitter.com/...

WSJ: “Facebook is backing away from efforts to sell ads in WhatsApp, marking a retreat from a controversial plan that drove the creators of the popular messaging service to resign more than 18 months ago” https://www.wsj.com/...

Not sure the hed fits the body on this story. “The company eventually plans to introduce ads into its Status feature—but for now the focus is on features allowing businesses to communicate with customers...” Sounds like a marketing play to me! https://www.wsj.com/...

The cofounders of WhatsApp left after Facebook executives pushed them to sell ads and make money. Now, after all that controversy, Facebook is abandoning its plans, report ⁦@JeffHorwitz⁩ & ⁦@KirstenGrind⁩ https://www.wsj.com/...

It will instead “focus on helping businesses connect with customers”: that sounds sensible. https://twitter.com/...

Facebook reportedly no longer planning to sell ads in WhatsApp. Instead, its focus is on developing features for businesses to communicate with customers. WSJ reports that Facebook “eventually” plans to introduce ads into its Status feature. https://www.wsj.com/...
