This is the payoff of a pipeline Mobileye has been building for years: the "road experience management" data-harvesting plan Intel laid out in early 2018, running on the EyeQ chips already shipped in volume to automakers. The 2016 HERE partnership established that self-driving-grade HD maps were the shared goal; today's report shows the data side of that equation operating at scale — 3.7 million miles collected per day from customer vehicles.

What makes it matter commercially is Mobileye's incumbency: with roughly 70% of the driver-assist market, its sensors are already in enough cars to crowdsource map-making at a cost structure dedicated mapping fleets can't match.
