TikTok says it didn't block US teen's account with Uighur persecution video, but did block device associated with her other account banned for bin Laden pic

There has been significant interest and confusion regarding a user's two TikTok accounts and her viral video talking about the Uighur community in China.

TikTok is accused of censoring anti-Chinese government content, again

UPDATE: tik tok has issued a public apology and gave me my account back. Do I believe they took it away because of a unrelated satirical video that was deleted on a previous deleted account of mine? Right after I finished posting a 3 part video about the Uyghurs? No. pic.twitter.…

and it is interesting that a http://musical.ly/ investor deleted this tweet within minutes of me retweeting it. wonder why. one of the benefits if living behind the GFW for a few years is you learn to screenshot interesting things, you just never know... https://twitter.com/... h…

This teenager was only reinstated because she was viral enough to raise an outcry. How many people does TikTok block regularly for political content without anyone much noticing? https://www.theguardian.com/ ...

One overlooked aspect: TikTok banned a teenager for posting “terrorist content.” This is that content: A joke video with half a second of Osama bin Laden's face. @x_feroza said, “That was me making a joke to cope with the racism” she faces as a Muslim girl https://www.washingtonp…

TikTok has behaved surprisingly well and much more transparently than Fb or Twitter regarding that eyelash curler video issue: https://newsroom.tiktok.com/ ...

    5. Banning device which recently created multiple accounts on your social media service, one of which was banned after our limited smartness AI detected possibly terrorist content is a no brainer next step 6. Looks like what happened with TikTok here: https://www.techmeme.com/...

The timeline: Nov. 15: She posts video including bin Laden. Has account banned. Starts new account. Nov. 23: She posts videos about detention camps in China, which go viral. Nov. 25: Her phone is banned. But TikTok says it's related to the Nov. 15 video, not viral criticism

Yeah... not really buying that TikTok took her account down cause of her Osama bin Laden content. The timing seems suspicious 🤔 Regardless I am glad her Uighur content has new life on other people's active accounts 😭

It doesn't seem straightforward. Look: “There's a trend on TikTok where you post like, ‘The type of boys or girls I liked when I was little,’” Aziz said. “Mine was like, ‘I liked a lot of white guys, but now I like brown people’ and at the end was [bin Laden] as a joke.”

New: TikTok says sorry, admits some fault re: removing viral video about China's detention camps. But @x_feroza isn't convinced: “TikTok is trying to cover up this whole mess. I won't let them get away with this” https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ... @TonyRomm
  • @hadas_gold Hadas Gold on x
Wow. “TikTok also acknowledged that her video about China had been removed for 50 minutes on Wednesday morning, which it attributed to a “human moderation error.” https://twitter.com/...
  • @tonyromm Tony Romm on x
NEW: TikTok admits error after penalizing 17-year-old user who posted political videos. TikTok reverses device plan, plans internal review, and revealed new takedown stats — but the teen says the timeline suggests censorship. https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ...
