Canalys: global smart speaker shipments reached 28.6M, up 44% YoY, in Q3 2019 as Amazon shipped 10.4M units, up 66% YoY, and Google shipped 3.5M, down 40% YoY

Context & Ripple Effects

Google has been losing this market all year: after briefly overtaking Amazon back in Q1 2018 on Home Mini volume, it was passed again in Q2 2019 when Baidu crossed Google to take 17.3% share on 4.5M shipments. The Q4 2018 holiday quarter showed what a two-horse race looked like at its peak, with Amazon at 13.7M and Google at 11.5M units in a combined 38.5M-unit quarter.

Today's Canalys numbers end any pretense of parity: Amazon shipped 10.4M units, up 66% YoY, while Google fell to 3.5M, down 40%. The overall market still grew 44% to 28.6M units — meaning essentially all incremental growth went to Amazon and Chinese vendors rather than Google.

First-order effects

  • Amazon extends its global lead decisively, shipping roughly three times Google's volume in a quarter where the total market grew — its discount-driven push into new regions is converting directly into share.
  • Google's smart speaker business is now in outright contraction, down 40% YoY and behind Baidu worldwide, leaving it with neither the US lead it held in early 2018 nor a foothold in China's fast-growing half of the market.

Second-order effects

  • Baidu, Alibaba, and other Chinese vendors are absorbing the growth Amazon doesn't take, entrenching a split market where US and China demand — 70% of the global market per Canalys' earlier data — is served by different assistant ecosystems.
  • Google faces pressure to respond with aggressive hardware pricing or bundling to stop the slide, since every quarter of decline compounds the assistant-install-base gap against Alexa and the Chinese players.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, the smart speaker market structurally bifurcates into an Amazon-led West and a domestically-dominated China, making voice-assistant scale a regional rather than global contest and squeezing Google into a distant third position in both arenas.

The trend: The smart speaker market is consolidating around Amazon globally and Chinese vendors domestically, with Google transitioning from co-leader to also-ran within 18 months.
