Sources: Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund invested $400M in Travis Kalanick's CloudKitchens in January, valuing the “ghost kitchen” operator at about $5B

The sovereign-wealth fund—also an early investor in Uber—poured $400 million into CloudKitchens in January

Wall Street Journal

Context & Ripple Effects

This is the second act of a relationship that began on Uber's cap table: Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund made its $3.5B bet on Uber in 2016 and took a board seat, then stayed close as Kalanick took over City Storage Systems with a $150M controlling interest in 2018. The January check extends that tie from ride-hailing to repurposed real estate running ghost kitchens.

The fund has been building this playbook across its portfolio — it was also reported to be in talks for a similar-sized stake in Magic Leap at roughly $6B. And the space it is now funding already has competition forming around the same talent pool: ex-Uber founders raised Virtual Kitchen's $20M round led by Founders Fund explicitly to rival CloudKitchens.

First-order effects

  • CloudKachines enters 2019's later quarters with $400M of sovereign capital and an implied ~$5B valuation, giving Kalanick a war chest to acquire and convert real estate after his 2018 controlling-interest purchase of City Storage Systems.

Second-order effects

  • Virtual Kitchen's Founders Fund-backed raise shows competitors must now match both the model and the balance sheet — delivery infrastructure for restaurants becomes a capital-intensity race, not just a software one.

Third-order effects

  • PIF is emerging as a repeat backer of marquee individual founders (Uber, CloudKitchens, and reportedly Magic Leap talks), meaning Gulf sovereign money increasingly shapes which post-founder ventures get scaled — and invites the reputational scrutiny that followed the Uber stake.

The trend: Sovereign wealth funds are moving from passive mega-stakes in mature startups to early conviction checks in founders' next acts, with ghost kitchens and spatial computing among the first recipients.

CloudKitchens runs its own restaurant concepts out of these spaces too. Including “Egg The F* Out,” “F#ck Gluten,” “Excuse My French Toast,” and (personal favorite) “B*tch Don't Grill My Cheese”

Scoop: @TravisK secretly raised $400 million direct from Saudi Arabia to fund his new venture CloudKitchens back in January, at roughly $5 billion valuation (w/ @RoryWSJ) https://www.wsj.com/...

A “ghost kitchen” is also what they call the room where Saudi Crown Prince MBS and his henchmen take political opponents to butcher them. https://twitter.com/...

Recall Travis is close to Saudi Public Investment Fund Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who gave him billions plus 3 board seats at Uber.

Btw, we also found CloudKitchens's “secret” SF location. It's at 60 Morris St., in SoMa. Here's some photos: pic.twitter.com/UELUR40sl8

People are talking shit about this, but personally I salute Travis Kalanick for finding a way to convert Saudi oil revenue into heavily subsidized grilled cheese sandwiches for every American https://www.wsj.com/...

So the Saudi investment fund led a $7.3 billion round into the Kalanick-led Uber in 2016. Those shares are now valued at $4.1 billion. https://www.wsj.com/...
