Snapchat says it is testing dynamic ads that let brands automatically create ads in real-time based on their own product catalogs

Several design templates are available for the format  —  Snapchat will conduct an open beta-test of dynamic ads that enable brands to automatically create ads …

Adweek David Cohen

Context & Ripple Effects

This is the next step in a three-year buildout of Snapchat's performance-ad stack. The platform first industrialized its ad delivery with Snap Ads Between Stories and a formal Ads API in 2016, then added Promoted Stories and AR Trial Ads in late 2017, and in 2018 made [[a:933906|Shoppable Snap ads available through its self-serve platform while letting advertisers import product catalogs and adding advanced pixel targeting]].

Dynamic ads close that loop: the catalogs advertisers were already importing now feed automated real-time ad creation across several design templates, moving Snapchat from formats advertisers build by hand toward ones the system assembles itself.

First-order effects

  • Brands already running Shoppable Snap ads and importing catalogs via the self-serve platform can now generate ad creative automatically instead of producing each unit manually, lowering the production cost per SKU advertised.
  • Snapchat's open beta signals it is courting direct-response advertisers, not just the brand-awareness buyers its earlier Promoted Stories and AR Trial Ads formats targeted.

Second-order effects

  • Automated catalog-driven creative puts Snapchat's self-serve offering in direct competition with larger rivals' dynamic-ad products for the same retail and e-commerce budgets, pressuring Snap to keep iterating on templates and targeting rather than resting on format novelty.
  • As ad creation shifts to automation, agencies and design shops that built their Snapchat work on bespoke creative lose volume, while advertisers' internal commerce teams gain leverage over spend.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds — API in 2016, shoppable formats in 2017-2018, automated creative in 2019 — Snapchat is structurally repositioning from a premium brand-video venue into a performance-marketing channel, which would reshape what kinds of advertisers anchor its auction and how its inventory is priced.
  • Catalog-fed automation also points toward ad platforms competing less on unique formats (the AR and Stories bets of 2016-2017) and more on the efficiency of their data pipelines from product feed to rendered ad.

The trend: Social platforms are converging on catalog-driven, machine-assembled advertising, trading bespoke creative formats for automated performance pipelines aimed at e-commerce budgets.

The format is already working well for some e-commerce and direct-to-consumer brands, with increasing ROAS and decreasing cost-per-purchase. https://www.businessinsider.com/ ...

I've been running them in both cold and remarketing. Our broad has outperformed FB broad dynamic by 23% in same time frame.

This Dynamic Ads announcement is a pretty big deal for Snap. Immediately relevant to win the always on video ad budgets: mid-roll, Discover feed, and eventually contextual ads overlaid onto existing video content ( https://twitter.com/... ), but will be especially huge for AR ads…
