Here's a closer look at the Pixel 4 camera vs. Apple's iPhone 11 Pro. Plenty of sample photos in here, but you'll have to wait for the full review for much more. Details here: https://www.theverge.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Some of the first pictures putting Pixel 4 against the iPhone 11! The competition is getting fierce! Can't wait to do my own comparisons. https://twitter.com/...

Hopefully @Google has fixed the reliability of its camera in general. My Pixel 3 camera has had a stuttering problem for a while that sounds hardware-related (others have reported similar problems). Too bad, because when it works, it works really well. https://twitter.com/...

But there's more that he & Pixel camera product manager Isaac Reynolds told me: The Pixel 4 now calculates portrait mode iamgery on *raw* data, not the processed JPEG. That means bokeh looks better with point sources of light behind the subject. 3/

Also, Pixel 4 will write depth map data into all files (if you enable the option), which in principle lets you edit based on 3D scene data, e.g. brighten the foreground only. @Lightroom lets you edit iPhone photos this way already today. 4/

I interviewed @marclevoy about Google's computational photography tricks in the Pixel 4. Here's our exclusive look at the new portrait mode and more. Pixel 4 is the first camera to see in stereo with 2 baselines (dual-pixel sensor + dual cameras). 1/thread https://www.cnet.com/..…

My favorite moment on stage was @marclevoy tweak at Apple for the “mad science” line about computational photography. Apple followed Google's HDR+ approach, which blends up to 9 underexposed shots for better dynamic range. 5/

Some computational features Levoy mentioned on stage: better Super Res Zoom, Live HDR+ so you can trust the phone's exposure choice better, astrophotography, dual highlight/shadow exposure controls. #madebygoogle 2/

Levoy's jab came as he explained Pixel's HDR+ math about reducing image noise: “The noise goes down as the square root of the number of photos you average together. With nine images, you get a third as much noise. It's not mad science, it's just simple physics.” 6/

Probably because that Radar shit is gonna be used for some crazy privacy invasive tracking for Google later on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://twitter.com/...

Google is slowly, but surely killing every reason people loved the devices from Google. It started with price. Then with copying everything that was wrong with Apple (uhmm.. headphone jack). And now this. No mocking Apple in ads on storage this time then? #madebygoogle https://tw…

Says a lot about Google's interest in hardware. https://twitter.com/...

One of the best perks that came with buying a flagship Pixel phone is no more. https://www.theverge.com/...
