Interview with Google execs about Project Soli, the tech behind Pixel 4's Motion Sense radar, and why they think gesture-sensing is more than just a gimmick

Why does a phone need radar?  —  By now, you've heard: the new Google Pixel 4 has a tiny radar chip inside it, which allows you to swipe or wave your hand to do a few things.

The Verge Dieter Bohn

Motion Sense helps you get things done on your #pixel4 without touching it. Swipe to skip a song, silence a call with a flick of your hand, and unlock your phone super fast with face unlock. #madebygoogle pic.twitter.com/HAIBtBUsxE

My quick hands-on with the new Pixel Buds — just the hardware though, the demo units here don't work yet. Seems like a solid AirPods competitor but nothing makes me sad like platform-specific features. And not out until spring. (Video incoming) https://www.theverge.com/...

🚀🎧 Launch day is the best day. So many great things coming out from @madebygoogle today, but I'm particularly proud of the design and research work that has gone into the new Pixel Buds. We've been seriously sweating every detail. https://www.blog.google/...

Here's a closer look at the Pixel 4 camera vs. Apple's iPhone 11 Pro. Plenty of sample photos in here, but you'll have to wait for the full review for much more. Details here: https://www.theverge.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Some of the first pictures putting Pixel 4 against the iPhone 11! The competition is getting fierce! Can't wait to do my own comparisons. https://twitter.com/...
  • @dylanljmartin Dylan Martin on x
Hopefully @Google has fixed the reliability of its camera in general. My Pixel 3 camera has had a stuttering problem for a while that sounds hardware-related (others have reported similar problems). Too bad, because when it works, it works really well. https://twitter.com/...
  • @stshank Stephen Shankland on x
But there's more that he & Pixel camera product manager Isaac Reynolds told me: The Pixel 4 now calculates portrait mode iamgery on *raw* data, not the processed JPEG. That means bokeh looks better with point sources of light behind the subject. 3/
  • @stshank Stephen Shankland on x
Also, Pixel 4 will write depth map data into all files (if you enable the option), which in principle lets you edit based on 3D scene data, e.g. brighten the foreground only. @Lightroom lets you edit iPhone photos this way already today. 4/

I interviewed @marclevoy about Google's computational photography tricks in the Pixel 4. Here's our exclusive look at the new portrait mode and more. Pixel 4 is the first camera to see in stereo with 2 baselines (dual-pixel sensor + dual cameras). 1/thread https://www.cnet.com/..…
  • @stshank Stephen Shankland on x
My favorite moment on stage was @marclevoy tweak at Apple for the “mad science” line about computational photography. Apple followed Google's HDR+ approach, which blends up to 9 underexposed shots for better dynamic range. 5/
  • @stshank Stephen Shankland on x
Some computational features Levoy mentioned on stage: better Super Res Zoom, Live HDR+ so you can trust the phone's exposure choice better, astrophotography, dual highlight/shadow exposure controls. #madebygoogle 2/
  • @stshank Stephen Shankland on x
Levoy's jab came as he explained Pixel's HDR+ math about reducing image noise: “The noise goes down as the square root of the number of photos you average together. With nine images, you get a third as much noise. It's not mad science, it's just simple physics.” 6/

Probably because that Radar shit is gonna be used for some crazy privacy invasive tracking for Google later on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://twitter.com/...

Google is slowly, but surely killing every reason people loved the devices from Google. It started with price. Then with copying everything that was wrong with Apple (uhmm.. headphone jack). And now this. No mocking Apple in ads on storage this time then? #madebygoogle https://tw…

I have been staying loyal to Android and Pixel so far but with Google deciding to skip Pixel 4 launch in India, it's time to switch to iPhone. And once you get sucked into that ecosystem, well, it's a point of no return. 👏 Google. Sigh https://techcrunch.com/...
  • @themaholupper Ali on x
Quick notes: 1. Pixel4 images consistently lowering exposure to avoid highlight blowout, iPhone more willing to overexpose them to brighten up image overall 2. iPhone pictures consistently warmer & more saturated than Pixel 3. iPhone detail in SOME instances more than Pixel https…

Underappreciated Pixel 4 feature: Unless you're an utter madman and buy the (glossy) black version, the matte finish on both the sides and back make this the *least* fingerprinty phone I've used in years. https://twitter.com/...

Very early Pixel 4 vs iPhone 11 photo comparisons — seems like the iPhone produces more detail but the Pixel's colors and contrast are still very distinct. https://www.theverge.com/...

Dumping the notch took #courage (though presumably @madebygoogle didn't have room with all the new sensors). The single best thing about motion sense radar is faster face unlock IMO. I look forward to a better screen, but of course the camera is the top item on my list. https://t…

Pixel 4 has big emphasis on cameras as expected but no Ultra-wide 😕 I'm super excited for proper Telephoto Portraits (you guys know I love my 50mm equivalent Portraits) but come on, the competition have all 3 cameras (Primary, Telephoto and Ultra-wide) pic.twitter.com/JURjkTKL9…

Google running down the list of Pixel 4 camera features: “And a flash that we hope you'll use mostly as a flashlight.” I'm dying.

Pixel 4 and 4 XL hands-on time. Google is doing more with the Pixel than it ever has before: high refresh rate screen, new Assistant, face unlock, and radar. That's four things — plus a new design and hopefully the camera is good. It's a lot! https://www.theverge.com/... https://…

Google: It's cute that others have picked up night sight features. We can take photos of galaxies now. Suck it, Apple.
  • @rogerwcheng Roger Cheng on x
Google throwing some shade on Apple's wide-angle camera lens. “While wide angle can be fun, we think telephoto is more important.” To be fair, the iPhone has had a telephoto lens for a while. The Pixel 4 finally gets one #madebygoogle

Pixel 4 camera: telephoto capabilities (don't crop, pinch-to-zoom and take photo), live HDR+ (signature look while composing photo in real-time), dual-exposure controls for HDR, white balancing (truer colors in tricky lighting), portrait mode (SLR bokeh) #madebygoogle

Google killed its Daydream VR platform today: - Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL do not support Daydream - Google stopped selling the Daydream View headset - Google has stopped certifying Android devices for Daydream https://venturebeat.com/...

Another nail in the coffin of consumer VR. I'm still cautiously optimistic about commercial AR and VR arcades (a fun visit, not ownership) may survive as a niche. But first 3D TV and now this — the marketplace has spoken about isolating glasses/headsets https://www.engadget.com/.…
