Microsoft and Google announce Google Assistant support in English for the Xbox One in beta, with the ability to launch games, take screenshots, and more

On Team Xbox, we put customer choice at the forefront of our decision making and regularly use community feedback to help guide the experiences we deliver to gamers.

Context & Ripple Effects

The Xbox One has been building toward assistant-agnosticism for over a year: Microsoft began testing Cortana and Alexa control of the console back in September 2018, covering power, game launches, and app starts. Today's beta adds a third voice platform — this time a direct partnership with Google rather than Microsoft's own or Amazon's assistant.

That makes Team Xbox's 'customer choice' framing concrete: Google gets a living-room surface on hardware it doesn't make, extending the developer-platform expansion it pursued in adding languages and implicit-request recognition to Assistant two years earlier. The feature is slated to ship broadly in the November 2019 Xbox Update.

First-order effects

  • Xbox One owners with Google Assistant devices can now launch games and capture screenshots by voice in English beta, joining Cortana and Alexa users who've had equivalent controls since last year's tests.

Second-order effects

  • Google gains a TV-adjacent footprint without shipping its own console hardware, while Microsoft positions the Xbox as neutral ground where Amazon and Google compete for the same command surface instead of being locked out by a first-party assistant.

Third-order effects

  • If consoles standardize on swappable assistant integrations, the competitive question shifts from which assistant ships with the device to which agent platform wins the action layer across third-party screens — with Microsoft effectively demoting Cortana from gatekeeper to one option among several.

The trend: Consumer-device makers are going assistant-agnostic, letting rival voice platforms compete for the same control surface rather than bundling their own — turning the assistant into a replaceable operating layer.

So you've killed functionality for the voice control using kinect and you're replacing it with outside the ecosystem peripherals?! Couldn't kinect be enhanced to use Google assistance, be it's own hub? Choose its own Digital assistant? Alexa/Google/Siri?!!

When competing product is better, you can do two things 1. Compete to fail 2. Embrace it Microsoft seems to be choosing later. Google Assistant on Xbox One and Alexa on Windows show Cortana is a lost cause. https://twitter.com/...
