Facebook will sunset its group stories feature, available globally since December of last year, on September 26

Context & Ripple Effects
Group stories is the latest casualty in a two-year pruning of Facebook's Groups surface: the standalone Groups apps were shut down back in 2017, and just last month the company pulled Chats in Facebook Groups, archiving existing conversations on August 22. The feature being retired here had only been available globally since December, making this a fast kill rather than a long fade.
It also fits a longer pattern inside the Stories family specifically — Facebook already folded Messenger Day into the main Facebook Stories product in 2017 via the Messenger Day shutdown, and reporting that year found Facebook Stories so little used it displayed friends who hadn't posted. Group stories appears to have failed the same adoption test.
First-order effects
- Group admins and members lose ephemeral posting within groups on September 26; any group-level storytelling has to move either to permanent group posts or to personal Facebook Stories aimed at friends rather than the group.
Second-order effects
- With group stories gone, engagement and ad inventory consolidate around the flagship Facebook Stories product, which is the variant Facebook has consistently chosen to keep while killing off every spinout — Messenger Day, now group stories.
Third-order effects
- If the pattern holds, platforms will stop maintaining parallel Stories clones on sub-surfaces and treat ephemeral sharing as one flagship format per company — a discipline Meta applies internally that rivals' own later Story retirements echo.
The trend: Social platforms are systematically retiring copied-on Stories formats wherever engagement never materialized, concentrating ephemeral sharing in a single flagship surface.
