Slack launches a dark mode for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with dark mode variants of all existing sidebar themes and a new “Nocturne” dark mode theme

Updated dark mode themes are available today  —  Slack is introducing a new dark mode for desktop versions of its workplace chat app.

The Verge Tom Warren

Context & Ripple Effects

Dark mode has become a competitive checkbox across productivity software this year: Microsoft started the push in late August by bringing dark mode to Outlook for iOS and Android and Office.com, building on a December Outlook refresh that had already promised it was coming. Slack's answer arrives two weeks later, and it goes broad at once — every existing sidebar theme gets a dark variant rather than a single toggle.

First-order effects

  • Desktop Slack users on macOS, Windows, and Linux can switch today, with all sidebar themes preserved in dark variants so custom branding setups don't break.

Second-order effects

  • The move closes a visible polish gap against Microsoft's workplace apps just as Teams competes with Slack for the same enterprise seats, raising the bar for what counts as feature parity between the two platforms.

Third-order effects

The trend: Workplace software vendors are racing to match OS-level dark modes as table stakes, with Microsoft and Slack setting the pace for each other.
