Twitter's followable topics may open big new audiences for the company, as well as polarize them; Twitter still thinks its “trending” section can be fixed

On Wednesday, Twitter invited reporters to its headquarters in San Francisco for an update on improvements to the product.

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitter's pitch on followable topics is the latest step in a long-running attempt to solve its core problem: new users who don't follow anyone see nothing worth reading. Execs including VP of Product Kayvon Beykpour later framed the bet explicitly around Lists and Topics as the way new users find relevant tweets, and the company had already been nudging timelines away from pure recency with recommended tweets placed at the top of the feed back in 2016.

The other half of the briefing — that Trends can be fixed — sits against a record of criticism that the feature amplifies hoaxes, which Twitter addressed by adding context and a representative tweet to trending topics. Topics and Trends are two answers to the same question: whether Twitter can organize content around interests rather than just the follower graph.

First-order effects

  • Users gain a way to follow subjects directly instead of accounts, which lowers the barrier for people who arrive without a social graph — the audience Twitter has struggled to convert since at least its 2016 campaign to explain itself as a breaking news destination.
  • Twitter's own framing concedes the trade-off: segmented topic exposure can polarize audiences even as it grows them, putting the burden on curation quality inside each topic.

Second-order effects

  • Interest-based surfaces give advertisers and media partners topic-level targeting rather than follower-level reach, shifting how value is priced on the platform.
  • If topics prove out, they become the foundation for deeper structures — the path Twitter later tested with invite-only, moderator-curated Communities built around narrow interests like dogs and skincare.

Third-order effects

  • The pattern points toward Twitter restructuring around interest graphs — topics, then moderated communities — rather than the chronological follower feed, a shift executives had already signaled in how they describe product decisions weighing algorithmic ranking against recency.
  • Whether interest segmentation broadens the user base or fragments it into polarized silos remains the unresolved variable, and it will shape both moderation load and advertiser confidence if the model becomes the default.

The trend: Social platforms are reorganizing distribution around explicit user interests — topics, communities, curated feeds — as an alternative to the follower graph, with Twitter iterating toward that structure one surface at a time.
