Samsung has unveiled ISOCELL Bright HMX, a 108MP smartphone camera sensor developed in collaboration with Xiaomi, one of the largest ever at 1/1.33-inches

The HMX arrives just months after Samsung's 64-megapixel GW1 announcement, nearly doubling the resolution ceiling for phone sensors and pushing the optical format to 1/1.33 inches — among the largest ever fitted to a handset. The notable structural detail is the co-development: this was designed with Xiaomi, not built on spec for a catalog.

That collaboration model is what the rest of the arc confirms. Samsung's later ISOCELL HP2 pushed to 200MP with pixel binning to keep sub-micron pixels usable, and by late 2025 Xiaomi was shipping a $995+ 17 Ultra with a 200MP periscope and a 1-inch main sensor — the endpoint of the format-and-resolution climb the HMX started.

    Old enough to remember when people were losing their minds at 1.3 megapixel pocket digital cameras coming out, so seeing a 100 megapixel sensor for smartphones is quite something.
