Cray's Department of Energy pipeline has been building for years: the $200M DOE contract with Intel in 2015 put Cray on Xeon Phi-based systems, and the $258M exascale R&D award split among AMD, Cray, HPE, IBM, Intel, and Nvidia kept it funded through the pre-exascale design phase. In March, Intel named Cray its partner for what it billed as America's first exascale machine.
