This lands three months after Samsung's ISOCELL Bright GW1, its 64-megapixel mobile sensor slated for mass production in the second half of 2019 — so the 108MP HMX is not an isolated launch but the next rung on a deliberate ISOCELL ladder. What is new is the structure: HMX is the first of these sensors developed jointly with a phone maker, Xiaomi, rather than built speculatively for the merchant market.

That co-development model is what the later record validates. Samsung pushed the same playbook to a 200MP ISOCELL HP2 with 0.6μm pixels by early 2023, and Xiaomi's late-2025 Xiaomi 17 Ultra still ships a 200MP periscope alongside a 50MP 1-inch main sensor — evidence that the resolution race HMX opened became a durable pillar of both companies' flagships.

    Old enough to remember when people were losing their minds at 1.3 megapixel pocket digital cameras coming out, so seeing a 100 megapixel sensor for smartphones is quite something.
