Twitter's web app code suggests that the company is working on a search feature for Direct Messages

As Twitter users, we often have to scroll through the numerous Direct Messages just to find the past conversations we want to recall.  The older the message, the longer it takes to scroll, up to minutes if you are lucky.

Jane Manchun Wong's code find lands mid-way through a long, incremental rebuild of Twitter's Direct Messages. The platform had already added desktop notifications for DMs on the web in 2015 and a Requests inbox filtering messages from non-follows in 2017, but search inside conversations remained absent — users scrolled through ever-longer histories to recall anything older.

What makes this snippet notable in hindsight is the lag: the keyword search Wong's discovery foreshadowed did not reach users until Twitter shipped it across web, iOS, and Android nearly three years later, per the eventual upgrade that let users search conversations by keyword rather than just names. The 2019 leak is therefore a marker of how far behind the feature was, not how imminent.
