It wasn't “system updates” as it claimed. StockX was mopping up after a data breach, TechCrunch can confirm.

Exclusive: @StockX was hacked, with more than 6.8 million user records stolen. Instead of telling its customers, the company told them that this week's password reset was for “system updates.” https://techcrunch.com/...

StockX has a statement basically confirming my earlier reporting — but did not answer my specific questions about why the company deliberately lied to its customers. Here's the statement: https://stockx.com/... Here's my earlier story: https://techcrunch.com/...

One more point here is that @stockx took active measures to deceive their users. In doing so, they robbed users of the ability to determine for themselves whether they needed to take steps to compensate for their information being disclosed. It's reckless endangerment. https://tw…

Bad enough to not come clean about a 6.8M customer breach, but then to have a cold call email with a password reset link too? https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Disclosure in this industry is still a mess, both disclosure to breached organisations and disclosure to impacted consumers. Too many vested commercial interests get in the way of honesty and transparency. https://twitter.com/...

Make no mistake: StockX not only lied about the reasons for its password reset, but it actively tried to cover it up. But hey, it's only the customers who get hurt. https://techcrunch.com/... https://twitter.com/...

We received 1,000 records from the stolen @StockX database. I contacted dozens of users this morning, providing them data from their own stolen records — data only they could know. Every person confirmed their data was accurate. More: https://techcrunch.com/...
