Eddy Cue's team said a year ago they were rebuilding Apple Maps from the ground up to own the entire map stack, the way Google does — and Justin O'Beirne's teardown of the first rebuilt regions showed the trade-offs: better road geometry than Google in the Bay Area, but weaker location data. iOS 13 is the moment that rebuild scales into the service's biggest update yet.

The stakes are structural rather than cosmetic: the iPhone launched twelve years ago with Google powering its maps, and Apple claimed back in 2015 that Maps was already used three times more often than any rival on iOS. Owning the data layer behind that volume is what removes Google from a core iPhone surface.
