This is the third act of a mapping program Facebook has been building since 2017, when it created a map of Earth pinpointing any man-made structure at 5-meter resolution to guide its Internet-provision efforts. In April 2019 it followed with AI-derived population-density maps covering the majority of Africa, and weeks later opened population, movement, and network-coverage maps to nonprofits tracking infectious disease.

Map With AI turns that internal capability into an external toolset: commercially available satellite imagery plus AI to chart previously unmapped places, many in the developing world. The significance is that Facebook is productizing geographic data infrastructure that barely exists in these regions — the same infrastructure its own connectivity business depends on.

  • Governments, humanitarian agencies, and local mappers in unmapped regions suddenly have machine-generated road and building baselines where none existed, accelerating their own survey work.
