This beta test is an early waypoint in a long arc: two years earlier, sources reported Apple was already testing a new 3D facial sensor to unlock an OLED iPhone and authorize payments (Bloomberg's report on Apple's 3D face-scoring tests). Extending that hardware-based authentication from the lock screen to iCloud.com means the same sensor chain now gates access to Apple's web services.

What makes it more than a convenience feature is where it leads — a year later Apple formalizes biometric logins across the web in Safari (Safari 14 bringing Face ID and Touch ID to mobile and desktop web) and ultimately folds the pattern into Passkeys, with Apple ID passkeys generated automatically by iOS 17 and Sonoma (iCloud.com and Apple.com going passwordless in 2023).
