Shopify says users can now message its 820K+ merchants through Apple's iMessage-based Business Chat service, and adds support for Apple Pay

Context & Ripple Effects

This is the second big conversation channel Shopify has wired into its platform: back in 2016 it let businesses sell directly inside Facebook Messenger, and the new Apple Business Chat support extends the same playbook to iMessage, where iPhone users already live. The pairing with Apple Pay matters because it closes the loop — a merchant conversation can end in a one-tap payment rather than a redirect to a browser checkout.

The arc that follows confirms the strategy was durable: Shopify later built its own web-based Shopify Chat and pushed its Shop Pay checkout onto surfaces it doesn't control, including Instagram and Facebook Shops. Messaging-plus-payments is the connective tissue across all of it.

First-order effects

  • Shopify's 820K+ merchants immediately gain a free, native channel to answer customer questions inside iMessage, while iOS shoppers get Apple Pay as a faster path to completing purchases on Shopify storefronts.

Second-order effects

  • Apple becomes a de facto commerce infrastructure provider — every Business Chat conversation routed to a Shopify store deepens iMessage's role beyond messaging and puts Apple Pay in front of hundreds of thousands of additional buyers.
  • Facebook's Messenger commerce integration, until now Shopify's flagship chat channel, faces direct competition from an Apple-owned rival for the same merchant conversations.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, checkout migrates into whatever conversation surface the customer already occupies — with platforms like Apple and Facebook controlling the rails and commerce software like Shopify competing on how seamlessly it plugs into each one.

The trend: E-commerce platforms are dissolving their own storefronts into third-party conversation and social surfaces, trading direct traffic for distribution wherever customers already are.
